Under the hood: Monty the Land Rover

People tend to choose vacation destinations based on how blue the water is or how pampered they will get at the spa. And for those of us bound to e-mail inboxes and office cubicles, average length of stay is usually somewhere in the week to ten day neighborhood. Ric and his girlfriend Charlie took a slightly different approach to their escape from reality this year. The Shepherds Bush, London-based couple decided to skip the Pina Coladas and all-you-can-eat buffet lines and instead spend six months roaming the earth in their ‘94 Defender affectionately known as Monty. Ric, Charlie and Monty, who left London October 1st, will have clocked an astonishing 14,000 miles when they reach Cape Town in March. That’s about 2,000 miles more than most Americans drive in a single year. As you can imagine, WIFI access is pretty hard to come by but, somewhere between the border of Ethiopia and Kenya, Ric and Charlie were good enough to share their experiences with us.

Land Rover Defender – Puerto Mutis, Panama

Land Rover Panama

We spot Defenders in Manhattan all the time. But the owner of this handsome 110 would likely brand them as off road posers considering the biggest daily obstacle they will face is a pothole on the West Side Highway. And we must admit, this 4×4 looks particularly at home outside the concrete jungle, where its heavy duty underpinnings can make good on their engineering promise.

Land Rover Defender 90 – West 20th Street, NYC

September 16th, 2009 by Ian

Defender 90 1

The Defender 90 is already a pretty capable little ute. But equipped with Hella lights up top, added fogs in the grille, supersized hazard lights on the fenders and a Warn winch up front, this green hard top spotted on West 20th looks ready to take on just about anything Manhattan can muster. So watch out flash floods. Pot holes, eat your heart out. And cabbies…you better steer clear.  This all terrain warrior is ready for action, or a natural disaster, whichever comes first.

Land Rover LR3 [G4 Challenge Edition] – Ludlow Street, NYC

July 23rd, 2009 by Ian

Land Rover G4 Challenge 1

The owner of this LR3 is going to scale the wall of Katz’s Deli after he scarfs down one of their humungous Corned Beef sandwiches. No seriously, this LR3 is a legit, trail rated ute thanks to its participation in the 2006 Land Rover G4 Challenge, a global off roading competition staged across Thailand, Laos, Brazil and Bolivia that saw 18 nations participate.

Land Rover One Ten – West 25th Street, NYC

May 7th, 2009 by Ian

land-rover-one-tenThe Land Rover One Ten (introduced in 1983) is the predecessor to the more commonly known Defender 110.  The “Defender” series models were meant to be rock solid little utes that could tackle the toughest of terrains and look exceptionally cool while doing so. These ruggedly handsome  Land Rovers have amassed an army of passionate enthusiasts who keep demand and resale value shockingly high. We still have bragging rights though; the first Land Rover design was inspired by the original WWII era Jeep, made right here in the good old US of A.
