International Harvester Scout II – NW 18th & Johnson, Portland (OR)

I don’t know too much about these little utes but their muscular looks, short-wheel-base, huge tires and questionable ride quality have always fascinated me. Of course, I would always feel more comfortable around a Defender, Wrangler or a Gelaendwagen. Their lean aesthetic and purposeful/functional design epitomize off-road vehicles as far as I’m concerned. But in spite of their misleading design (muscular off-road vehicle with a few soft curves), I’m sure these Scouts have something to say. Like a small dump truck that’s being forced into a car body…

Jeep Wrangler – West 25th Street, NYC

We spotted Darth Vader’s Wrangler on W25th Street and it’s all business. Black wheels, matte black finish and enough auxiliary lighting to land a damn airplane. Overall a very dark and ominous affair to say the least. Check out the custom wheels inside those massive tires – we might like these better.

International Harvester Scout II – East 18th Street, NYC

The Scout was International Harvester’s answer to the CJ or Civilian Jeep. It offered up all the bare bones appeal and off road ability you could handle albeit in a streetable package that was comfortable for everyday motoring. Unlike the Jeep and similarly intentioned Geländewagen, both of which started life as military vehicles, the Scout was engineered from the ground up to be a road going passenger vehicle. In fact, the Scout and Scout II were among the pioneering SUVs that contributed to America’s love affair with the species.

Jeep Wrangler Islander – Broome Street, NYC

jeep-islander-broome-streetOn this gloomy, rain soaked hump day we bring you sunshine and this special edition Wrangler bearing a tropical name. The Islanders were not terribly different than their base model brethren, save for the vibrant “Sunset” Islander graphics and body colored wheel flares.
