Bowers & Wilkins Presents: Music On The Move
This Week’s Playlist Challenge: Wildcard – Pick your own situation (getting audited, getting married, getting tipsy, etc) and submit an appropriate playlist (submit by Dec 17)
News & Updates
Music on the Move Challenge #5 – And the winner is…
They say all good things must come to an end. So, without further ado, we are pleased to announce the 5th and final play mix engineer to win a Bowers & Wilkins Zeppelin Mini in our Music on the Move promotion.
Congrats Ryan Mack, you’re playlist was a cut above the rest.
“Ok, so I’m going to pull a random selection of 90′s rock for two reasons – 1) It was an incredibly important change of pace from the synthesizers, big hair, and stupid lyrics that dominated the 80′s and 2) it reminds me of my high school years which included baseball practices and weekend blowies in the back of my car. So here it goes, in no particular rank or order….”
1) Third Eye Blind – Motorcycle Drive By
One of the best examples of emotional storytelling through music. Classic story about a dude who doesn’t get the girl. It starts slow, gets heavy, ends slow. One of, if not the most, popular song among Third Eye Blind fans.

2) Stone Temple Pilots – Plush
You can’t get much better than Scott Weiland and the Stone Temple Pilots in the early to mid 90′s. Maybe it was their unique blend of musical styles or maybe it was just the heroin. Whatever it was, they produced three incredible albums from ’92 to ’96.
3) The Toadies – Possum Kingdom
A big Toadies fan will tell you the group produced numerous hits. Most identify the band as a one hit wonder, along with the likes of Dishwalla, Deep Blue Something, and Seven Mary Three. However, no matter how you classify the band, their single Possum Kingdom brought the band mass notoriety. Some people think its about vampires. Others think its about the Zodiac Killer. However, the band states that its based on stories their families had told them as kids about an eerie lake in Possum Kingdom (just outside Dallas).
4) Jane’s Addiction – Jane Says
One of my all time favorites. An incredible band line-up consisting of Perry Farrell, Dave Navarro, Stephen Perkins, and Eric Avery. In 1997, Flea joined the group for a 1 year stint. Quite the eccentric group.

5) Beck – Loser
I think Chuck Klosterman from Spin Magazine sums it up best - ‘Here’s what really happened when MTV played Beck’s “Loser” for the first time, in 1994: The culture inverted itself, weirdness was instantaneously mainstreamed, everyone stopped combing their hair, people slept more and purchased broken turn tables at stoop sales, dirtbags began using the word art in casual conversation, Michael Cera entered kindergarten.’
Music on the Move Playlist Challenge #4 – And the winner is…
As the Music on the Move promotion rolls on into its fifth and final week, we have another lucky winner to announce. This week’s master playlist technician, who will soon take possession of a brand new Zeppelin Mini docking station, has exhibited a keen ability to pump himself up with just the right smattering of rock ballads. More specifically, this headbanging car-guy enjoys listening to “face melting muscle flexing, 45 lb plate slamming, brow furrowing metal” while behind the wheel.
Take a bow Aaron…you are this week’s winner. In addition to that rad Bowers & Wilkins sound system, you also get to have your entry publicly displayed for the Man on the Move community to see. Hey, they don’t call it social media for nothing my friend. See his winning entry below and after the jump.
The 5th and final playlist challenge begins today. Make you submission by Dec 17 for a chance to grab the last B&W Zeppelin Mini
Playlist Challenge #4: Eye of the Tiger – Music you get amped up to on the way to…the gym, a basketball game, boxing training session, etc
“I was very excited to read this latest iteration of your weekly contest. Why? Because I listen to music that gets me pumped up before I go to the gym? No, for I do not go to the gym. However, I do love metal, hardcore and punk rock. And I do love getting pumped up for nothing and my hots on for nowhere. *catch the sneaky zeppelin ref?*
That being said, I would love to share with you my top five inner strength inducing masterpieces of the day. I commuted with these on my way to work on the subway, which, by the way; in hindsight, may not be the most ideal situation to listen to face melting muscle flexing, 45 lb plate slamming*, brow furrowing metal. Regardless, and without further adieu, I present to you my pretend bully fighting top 5 of the day:
*I am unable to lift 45lb plates
**no disrespect to the kia owners out there. Well, maybe a little disrespect.
(Videos above and below courtesy of the Institute for Macho Guy Stuff)
1. pantera: walk, album: vulgar display of power
RE-SPECT, you talkin to me?
2. black flag: rise above, album: damaged
Hank rollins and friends, although now no longer together, still can supply you with all the anti authoritarian paint peeling power that you can pump through the speakers of your matte black ’71 dodge challenger.
3. master of puppets: metallica, album, master of puppets
Do I need to explain this one? One of the best metal anthems ever hammered into vinyl. The equivalent to a bored and stroked, naturally aspirated, fire breathing big block v-8 fueled by jack daniels.
4. pulley: soberbeah: album pulley
Embarassing fact: I lived in moms basement at one point (yes, I was that guy) and she walked in on me straight up JAMMING OUT to this track. In my underwear. It could have been worse. Im looking at you, judge reinhold, in fast times at ridgemont high.
5. night of the living dead: the misfits, album: walk among us
This list couldn’t be complete without jerseys own metal meathead, glen danzig. The pioneers of horror core, some misfits tracks just make you want to karate kick the snot out that guy in the kia in front of you**.
Music on the Move Playlist Challenge #3 – And the winner is…
(Yes, that is a Pope-mobile soap box car)
To follow up our “Sunday Cruising” playlist from last week, we proposed something a little more buttoned up this week. We dubbed this weeks playlist challenge, “Religion and Politics.” What 5 songs would you play in the car with your boss, in-laws or any other sensitive individuals? Remember that one time you had to drive your teacher home, and you had Cypress Hill’s Hits from the Bong on repeat…yea, that was awkward.
We’d like to give it up for James Lartin. After winning a damn runner up t-shirt last week, James bounced right back and showed us a solid playlist. Now James, you can use your t-shirt to dust off your badass Bowers and Wilkins Zeppelin Mini. Listen to your tunes and rejoice in the pleasantries of a victory.
We enjoyed your selection…Thanks for participating.
1.) Arethra Franklin – Skylark
3.) Joe Cocker – Bye Bye Blackbird
4.) Sam Cooke – Little Red Rooster
Music on the Move Playlist Challenge #2 – And the winner is…
Last week we brought you a fantastic in-car playlist to flip the switch on when you’re in the best of moods. It was full of energy and passion and good vibes for all. If you recall, the second Music on the Move playlist challenge asked for your top 5 songs for a sunday cruise. Appropriately, we called the challenge “Straight Cruisin”. We had a number of really good entries and, like last week, it was an incredibly tough decision. So tough in fact that we are moving to a winner and runner up scenario.
Take a bow Christopher Michaels, your whimsical playlist (pictured below) had us daydreaming about places far beyond the cubicle. Your reward…a brand new Bowers & Wilkins Zeppelin Mini docking station. Well done sir!
Honorable mention to James Lartin. You get an official Man on the Move t-shirt for your worthy entry. I know it’s not as cool as the stereo, but we still have 3 more to give away so please do enter our next challenge. It will be announced tomorrow.

1.) William De Vaughn – Be Thankful For What You’ve Got
This song is the definition of Straight Cruising. West Coast style of course… Just picture yourself rolling through Los Angeles, CA in your 1964′ Chevrolet Impala (with or without hydrolics). ”Diamond in the back, sun-roof top, digging the scene with a gangsta lean.” With this tune cranked up it’s just another classic Sunday stroll through Southern California.

2.) The Tornadoes – Bustin’ Surfboards
You are now in Carlsbad, CA in your 1950 Ford Woodie. Complete with surf rack and surfboards stored awesomely above. The Tornadoes were a surf band from Redlands, California, the first to receive national airplay with a surf instrumental. The song was “Bustin’ Surfboards”, released on Aertaun Records in 1962, and it has since become a classic and mainstay of the surf genre. What better song to compliment such a awesome car! Surfs up!

3.) Santo & Johnny – Sleep Walk
This time were in Wildwood, New Jersey and it’s the 1956′ Chevrolet Convertible, the song is Sleep Walk by Santo & Johnny. ”Sleep Walk” is an instrumental steel guitar-based song recorded and released in 1959 by brothers Santo & Johnny. I can picture myself cruising to the boardwalk at Wildwood on a Sunday afternoon to ride the roller coaster with my girl.

4.) The Flamingos – I Only Have Eyes For You
Remember the movie a Bronx Tale? Well, Sonny just let you borrow his 1968 Cadillac Convertible and your cruising through the city listening to the Flamingos. The Flamingos were a doo wop group from Chicago, most popular in the mid to late 1950s and best known for their 1959 cover version of “I Only Have Eyes for You”. Hey C!, Just make sure you returns this car without a scratch!

Music on the Move Playlist Challenge #1 – And the winner is…
It has been one whole week since we introduced our first playlist challenge for Music on the Move. You know, the super cool Man on the Move promotion where you can win a fabulous Bowers & Wilkins Zeppelin Mini simply for telling us about memorable musical experiences you have had behind the wheel. If you recall, this week’s challenge was to submit your all time top 5 playlist for when you’re in the best of moods. From the Netherlands to South Carolina, we got a bunch of fantastic entries and more than a few colorful stories that had us laughing out loud. It was a really tough call, and we thank everyone for their entries, but there was one playlist that stood out above the rest. And we are proud to say that entry came from a fellow New Yorker. So, take a bow John Kovalsky…you’re the winner! Your playlist was thoughtful, genuine and packed full of amazing musical tales about some great cars you have owned and the many amazing life experiences you have while driving them.
Follow in John’s awesome foot steps and enter to win the next Music on the Move playlist challenge…Straight Cruisin…Top 5 songs (artist/song/description) for a leisurely Sunday stroll down the boulevard, up the coast or through those windy mountain passes. Wherever you go driving to clear your mind and relax.

Check out John’s full playlist after the jump…

1. Bruce Springsteen “Frankie” – Tracks: Whether it was driving around the coast of Southern California, the Strip in Jersey or the Gulf Coast this song is the bedrock soundtrack of a great day at the beach followed by linen shirts and sandals at night drinking ice cold beer on the sand. I had an old Range Rover with a huge sunroof when I lived in Cali, with the windows down, a San Diego girlfriend who was in her late teens and I was finally making it on my own in life. To this day I feel if I become a billionaire, marry a model and everything that goes with it life would never get any better.

2. George Strait “Amarillo By Morning” - Strait from the Heart: After leaving San Fran in an RS4, picking up Route 50 through Nevada, the Salt Flats and down to Santa Fe on a cross country drive to Virginia. My buddy and I left Santa Fe and listened to this song en route to ”The Big Texan” and “The Cadillac Ranch” in Amarillo. We continued through to Nashville, Tail of the Dragon and Route 58 (beautiful road btw) to the coast. All in the ride to Amarillo and the big Texas sky with George, being that free was one of the highlights. I had just moved to NYC, knew no one and was pretty depressed. My buddy had to move across the country and was dreading it. I told him I would fly out and do the drive with him as long as we stayed off the main roads as much as possible. Unforgettable trip even after haven driven across the country at least twenty times. A good friend, a good car and no time line is about as perfect as life can get.

3. The Beach Boys “Spirit of America” Spirit of America: Would listen to it with my father to go surfing in an old Buick Electra
Station wagon with wood paneling. As an adult do the same thing in my ’69 Porsche 912 and ’84 Toyota Landcruiser. I love the idea of Craig Breedlove building it in his garage, that the engine was a J47 from an old F86, and I love singing it in the worst falsetto voice I can muster. On the way out to Speedweek for the first time I sang this for three hours, when I arrived I almost cried.

4. Ron Dougan “Clubbed to Death” Furious Angels: The first time I heard this song it was part of a montage for the US Navy Landing Signal Officer School video. The entire eight minutes were clips of things going seriously wrong on the aircraft carrier (full disclosure I am a Naval Aviator). Since I have yet to see “The Matrix” I had no idea that this is where the song became popular. Nonetheless, at night in the rain at triple digits through the forest it just fits, as someone who has, driving like that is the closest thing to the dangers of landing at the boat. If you come through that clean you can take on the world.

5. Fleetwood Mac “Dreams” Rumors: I lost my innocence to this song. I was 18 and she was a 29 year old stripper. I had no idea what I was doing through any portion of the night including when she asked me to come home with her. I left her place, got in my ’88 Grand Wagoneer with an epic story that made me the envy of my friends. To this day when I leave a woman’s house and have to drive back (rarely now since I live in NYC) I put this (admittedly overplayed) song on and can’t stop smiling. ”Women, they will come and they will go…”

Some Inspiration: Secret To My Success
Our buddy David over at BNQT.com sent this playlist to help prime the pump and get your Music on The Move creative juices flowing – check it out!

1. Nightwish – Devil and the Deep Dark Ocean
Nightwish is Finnish opera rock power metal with a chick lead singer. Obviously Devil and the deep dark Ocean is one of the songs that medieval knights of Europe listened to while riding into battle on horseback. As a capable knight of the here and now, I also choose Nightwish to get me psyched while commuting to battle, er, a day of work in my cubicle.
2. Boys Don’t Cry – The Cure
While stuck in traffic in the rain after being dumped by my latest girlfriend, I sometimes I need to remind myself that boys don’t cry. So I listen to this song and it puts me back on track.
3. Deadmau5 – Hi Friend! (feat. Mc Flipside)
Deadmau5 is so hot right now. He’s got something like 500 million followers on twitterbook. He’s on the verge of played out, but I don’t even care. Let those little dance club trolls convulse in slow motion to his dubstep tracks. I listen to Hi Friend! (which IS NOT a dubstep track) on the way to the airport before I get in my plane and fly upside down for an hour. Geez, I sound like a pompous schmuck, maybe that’s why my girlfriend dumped me.
4. Daft Punk - Alive
Okay so I’m cheating a little bit… this is an entire album. But, it was on infinite loop at max volume for about three months after I purchased my 335i and was drag racing myself from stoplight to stoplight on PCH.
5. Yanni – The Storm
Laugh all you want, this s**t is epic. Like me. The Storm is one movement from Vivaldi’s four seasons, techno-charged by Yanni, that dude with a mustache and a mullet, who probably hooks up with more chicks than anyone who visits this website. Inspirational to say the least.
