Mercedes Benz SLS AMG – Madison Avenue, NYC

August 6th, 2010 by Stu

Tally up the cost of options on Mercedes’ new SLS AMG and the tab will easily crest $60k, about 1/3 of the vehicle’s $183K base price. Items like Bang & Olufsen sound [$6,400] and a Carbon Ceramic braking system [$12,500] are among the many high end extras adding girth to the already hefty bottom line. If you must spend a bit more judiciously, skip the Carbon Fiber Engine Compartment Covers ($5,400) and opt for one of the two matte paints ($3,900) like the one pictured here turning onto Madison Avenue. The matte paints, offered in “designo magno Allanite Grey” and “AMG magno Sylvanite Grey”, really toughen things up next to the more traditional finishes. Mercedes also offers a $12,750 hue called “AMG Alubeam silver” that transforms SLS into something the Silver Surfer might drive. Mercedes says the new process is used nowhere else in the world and lets the paint shine like liquid metal. As Chris Rock used to say, “Good lord that’s a lot of money”

Mercedes SLR McLaren – East 55th Street, NYC

August 2nd, 2010 by Stu

However arresting, rumor has is that these Mercedes SLR McLarens (now out of production) were never terribly successful in the sales department. And that the flurry of special edition models (722, Roadster, 722 GT, 722 S, Stirling Moss) were merely an effort to spur consumer demand enough so that Mercedes could make good on their contractual production obligations with McLaren. Regardless, the car is a real stunner and appears right at home in front of the well-to-do St. Regis on East 55th. In an effort to steal share from the “entry level” Ferraris and Lamborghinis of the world, Mercedes and McLaren have since decided to part ways in order to develop in house supercars of their own.

I found an ’06 with 815 miles on ebay for $120k in case you’re interested (they wanted nearly half a million for these when new).

Mercedes S400 Hybrid (Burberry Edition?) – 69th & Mad, NYC

April 5th, 2010 by Stu

This S400 Hybrid is decked out in plaid just in time for the Spring fashion season. We suspect the Burberry-esq livery is a wrap of some kind, not an actual custom paint job. Either way, it’s not doing any favors to the ordinarily handsome S-Class silhouette. We suspect the vehicle transformation was made for marketing purposes (Mercedes sponsors fashion week) and not out of sheer bad taste on the owner’s part. Either way, it’s butt ugly.

Thanks Jared!

German classics – Lincoln Blvd, Santa Monica

March 9th, 2010 by Mike

I’m not sure what it is about the Venice/Santa Monica border but it’s like a magnet for independent German auto mechanics. Including the guy I use, there are 7-8 indy establishments within walking distance from my house, usually with interesting cars on the lot. This spot in particular, called Glassers Auto Body, always catches my eye, mainly because of the aging Mercedes 450 SEL 6.9 and rotting BMW 2800 that have been sitting 3 millimeters from each other for years now. It’s a shame that two cars with so much historical significance are left in this condition, but even more of a shame that they’re not being driven. Oh well, at least they look pretty, even in this state.

Diesel Mercedes Duo – Palms Blvd, Venice CA

February 9th, 2010 by Mike

These diesel luxo tanks (W126 300SD and W123 300D) may appear unremarkable at first blush but subtle charm is actually their most endearing quality. The perfect balance of utilitarianism and refinement, these range toppers feel solid, secure and planted to the road. Power and agility, not so much. But so what – I’d drive my (future) family across the states in one and feel equally as comfortable pulling up to the valet at Avalon Beverly Hills as I would cruising down a bumpy dirt road with a full load at speed. Sure, a Civic could smoke you, but as he blows by, take a gander at the indestructible MB-Tex upholstery, beautifully designed center console, and 500k odometer reading. You’ll soon realize you’ve already won.

Mercedes 500 SEC – Venice Blvd – Venice, CA

February 2nd, 2010 by Mike

A 500 SEC is not the rarest sight, but like so many older Mercedes cars, most examples you come across are either beat up from neglect or very un-tastefully modified (aka molested). This owner respects the Benz, and himself, by applying no aesthetic mods—just some proper-sized AMG Monoblocks. At 11mpg it’s certainly not the most practical car in my fantasy Benz barn, but wow. Build quality, big power and safety (for its day), timeless styling. Looking clean yet mean with that battle scar on the front valance, this car strikes me as a well cared for daily driver. And it looks so good I’ve already forgiven the window tint and the four front wheels.

Mercedes 230SL – West 23rd Street, NYC

January 4th, 2010 by Ian

Benz1We’re not naïve to the fact that advancements in comfort, safety, reliability, performance and quality inevitably add heft and complexity to vehicle designs over time. And we know new cars are worlds apart from the classics in every measurable way. With that being said, today’s Mercedes SL550 sure has come a long way since the days of this 1960s 230SL we spotted on West 23rd in Chelsea. Outside of modern gadgetry like a retractable hard top, Active Body Control and the multifunction COMAND interface, it’s about 10 inches longer, nearly 1,400 pounds heavier and cost about $80,000 more than the pretty little roadster produced from 1963 to 1967.

Mercedes 220D – Holt Avenue, Los Angeles

November 19th, 2009 by Nick

Mercedes 220D

A little wink to those who get it – a beacon in a never-ending sea of mediocrity.  The nondescript cars on either side of this diesel Merc act as the foil to its diamond-in-the-rough nonchalance. This car isn’t screaming to be seen. It’s not striking a pose on Melrose. It’s tucked away on a quiet street allowing the Gods to shine down their praise and hear it whisper, “yo, seriously… I’m rad. Keep driving.”

Platinum Motorsports – Melrose Avenue, Los Angeles

November 9th, 2009 by Stu

Platinum Motorsports Challenger

Our buddy Matt spotted a couple of custom creations at Platinum Motorsport on Melrose. The high end tuner shop did a great job with this Hemi Orange Challenger SRT-8. We like the less-is-more aesthetic they achieved by removing or darkening the badges. And the black wheels, tints and fuel cap door lend a menacing effect to the already imposing muscle car stance.  Not like this baby needs it but we’re curious what’s going on under the hood. Check out the tricked out Mercedes CLS after the jump.
