Mercedes Benz SLS AMG – Madison Avenue, NYC

August 6th, 2010 by Stu

Tally up the cost of options on Mercedes’ new SLS AMG and the tab will easily crest $60k, about 1/3 of the vehicle’s $183K base price. Items like Bang & Olufsen sound [$6,400] and a Carbon Ceramic braking system [$12,500] are among the many high end extras adding girth to the already hefty bottom line. If you must spend a bit more judiciously, skip the Carbon Fiber Engine Compartment Covers ($5,400) and opt for one of the two matte paints ($3,900) like the one pictured here turning onto Madison Avenue. The matte paints, offered in “designo magno Allanite Grey” and “AMG magno Sylvanite Grey”, really toughen things up next to the more traditional finishes. Mercedes also offers a $12,750 hue called “AMG Alubeam silver” that transforms SLS into something the Silver Surfer might drive. Mercedes says the new process is used nowhere else in the world and lets the paint shine like liquid metal. As Chris Rock used to say, “Good lord that’s a lot of money”

Mercedes S400 Hybrid (Burberry Edition?) – 69th & Mad, NYC

April 5th, 2010 by Stu

This S400 Hybrid is decked out in plaid just in time for the Spring fashion season. We suspect the Burberry-esq livery is a wrap of some kind, not an actual custom paint job. Either way, it’s not doing any favors to the ordinarily handsome S-Class silhouette. We suspect the vehicle transformation was made for marketing purposes (Mercedes sponsors fashion week) and not out of sheer bad taste on the owner’s part. Either way, it’s butt ugly.

Thanks Jared!

Segway Human Transporter – Madison Avenue, NYC

January 20th, 2010 by Stu

Nine years ago eccentric engineer Dean Kamen unveiled the Segway Human Transporter (HT) — a gyro-stabilized, two-wheeled scooter that he claimed would transform personal transportation. His promise and self assuredness echoed that of Henry Ford about the Model T. But Kamen may have exaggerated. Even in a crowded and wealthy (the HT costs around $3,000) metropolis like Manhattan, you seldom hear the HT’s electric buzz. And though company financials are hard to come by, it seems clear that Segway sales are not living up to the hype. This New Yorker remains intrigued.

Mercedes S63 AMG – Madison Avenue, NYC

S63 AMG 1

Whether driving yourself or being driven, these opulent bruisers from AMG are likely the fastest way to get around Manhattan. Hell, they cost as much as a waterfront condo in Detroit and have more power than than a flippin Ferrari F430.

Porsche 944 Turbo – Madison Avenue, NYC

August 13th, 2009 by Ian

944 Turbo 1

The 944 was a hot ticket when it hit the scene back in ’82. Better equipped than the 924 it replaced, the 944 line was praised for its refined driving character and near-perfect weight distribution. And this pristine turbocharged example, spotted on Madison, looks pretty darn good despite its age. The owner seems to have kept this baby stock short of the modern 10 spoke wheels and bulging red brake calipers.

bentley-arnage-madison-aveWe caught  up with this Bentley Arnage on Madison Avenue, exactly where it belongs.  For over ten years this handcrafted vessel has served as the Bentley flagship. For a moment  it was the most powerful and fastest saloon in the market.
