Mini Cooper S [John Cooper Works] – Spring Street, NYC

August 25th, 2010 by Ian

Spotted this John Cooper Works Mini that is mightier than the rest on Spring Street in Soho. Unlike someone we know, this owner was able to control him or herself from covering the entire body in carbon fiber accents and ridiculously oversized rear wings. The result is a boy racer with a tasteful level of modifications that really emphasizes this hot hatchback’s ability to get up and go. All of the modern day Minis are pretty great thanks to their agile handling, great fuel economy, relative light weight, free scheduled manintenance and famous BMW fit & finish, but I particularly adore these supercharged gen 1 models. They somehow appear cleaner and less bulbous than the twin scroll turbo gen 2 models currently in dealers

2010 VW GTI MkVI – Hudson Street, NYC

October 27th, 2009 by Stu

MK6 GTI

VW used hot women and and a race-inspired video game application to launch the sixth generation GTI in Manhattan last week. And they claim to be the first manufacturer to rely entirely on the App Store to introduce a new car to the public. Classic Car Club on Hudson street was decked out with LCDs running a customized version of Firemint’s motion-activated Real Racing Game. Party goers could sample the new game while sipping on cocktails and listening to guest DJ ?uestlove from the Roots.

Subaru Impreza WRX STI – 74th and Broadway, NYC

September 21st, 2009 by Ian

Subaru1

We spotted this street legal rally racer on the Upper West Side Sunday. The new-for-2008 Impreza body style looks good in STI trim – more upscale than the previous generation model but still sporting that boy racer charm we have grown so fond of. STI, or Subaru Techinca International, is of course Subaru’s motorsports division responsible for World Rally Car preparation and the brand’s line-up of high performance passenger cars.

Volvo C30 R-Design – Washington Street, NYC

September 4th, 2009 by Ian

Volvo C30 1

Volvo is not the boxy brand you may recall. In fact, their current fleet is full of pleasing, dare I say it, fashionable shapes. From broad shouldered sedans [S40/80] to curvaceous crossovers [XC60/90] and sultry sun devils [C70], Volvo’s modern day design language is athletic and easily recognizable across the whole range. Those sculpted noses and muscular shoulders from Sweden look particularly spicy on this little C30 we spotted on Washington Street. And despite its multitude of airbags and energy-absorbing impact structures, this funky looking coupe screams fun, not boring sensibility.

VW GTI – N. Moore Street, NYC

June 19th, 2009 by Ian

volkswagen-gti1This founding member of the hot hatch hall of fame looks fast while standing still on Tribecca’s North Moore street. Go fast looks aside, you really can’t ask for a better city racer thanks to the uber wide torque curve (max torque available from 1800 – 5000 RPM), nimble handling and compact dimensions.

Audi A3 Sportback – 14th Street, NYC

June 10th, 2009 by Ian

audi-a31Everyone knows that Audi’s volume (eh hem..entry level) model in the U.S. is the A4, so we can’t really blame the boys from Ingolstadt for restricting the current A3 to two variations from an extensive lineup that consists of eight engines and two body styles (3/5 door) in Germany. But we are still fans of this slick little A3 Sportback
