Fiat 600 – 1st Avenue, NYC

The flawless 600 seen here, pronounced say-chento, is the handsome city car Fiat sold a million of (literally) in the short six years following its launch in 1955. Unlike its better known little brother that launched 2 years later in ’57, the 600 was water cooled and represented the first Fiat to feature a rear engine layout. All in, Fiat pumped out more than 2.5 million of these handsome little guys [measured just over 10 feet in length] from its Turin plant through the vehicle’s lifecycle [’55- ’69]. Love the 2-tone red and cream upholstery and rear bench seating configuration.

Fiat 500 Abarth: Rue Saint – Julien le Pauvre, Paris, France

Our pal Dave Pinter took time out of his busy Paris Auto Show schedule to chronicle some local street culture and remind us how much better Europeans have it than we do. Case in point, they have enjoyed this sweet little Fiat 500 since 2007 while we continue to wait for the retro modern hatchback to hit U.S. shores (the latest word is December 2010). This particular example, the Abarth, is a red hot performance version of the 500 with all manor of menacing design cues that transform vehicle character from urban chic to track ready boy racer. Think of the Abarth as Fiat’s throwback answer to Mini’s John Cooper Works-branded vehicles. Word on the street is that Americans will get an even hotter version of the Abarth sometime around the end of 2011/beginning of 2012. We can’t freekin wait!

Fiat 500 – West 37th Street, NYC

Pictured here, a landmark in Italian engineering and distinguished member of the city car hall of fame. Measuring just under 10 feet and weighing in at a bantam 1,168 pounds, this 1970 Fiat 500 Lusso (Italian for luxury) is compact enough to slip into an elevator shaft and light enough to lift into parking spaces. Well, maybe not. But it’s absurdly small and only by standing next to one can you get a true sense of the pint sized dimensions. Hell, a modern day Mini Cooper, a full 2 feet longer, looks like an Escalade next to this thing. Believe it or not, this seemingly spartan Lusso represents a more sophisticated 500 complete with revised interior and exterior styling “designed to meet the demands of a clientele looking for a car that was more comprehensive, more customized and more ‘luxurious'”. We can’t wait to start spotting modern, or nuova, 500s once they hit our shores later this year. The retro Italian hatchbacks, which have been on sale in Europe since 2007, should be hip enough to give Mini a real run for their money.

Greenwich Electra Auto and Body Repair – Greenwich Street, NYC

I’m walking down the street, minding my own business when this utterly bad ass XKR cruises by in all its customized glory. It immediately reminded me of those machine gun-touting movie cars used to chase down 007 in Die Another Day. While I never was a huge fan of the first gen XK8, modifications like this are working time and a half to change my mind. Notice how the clamp on hard top achieves a completely different design effect than a true fixed roof does. It’s chunkier and I dig it. Mixed in with the slick wheels, tires and ground effects and you have yourself one wicked Jag. We followed it into the service bay of this quaint little West Village garage and found other hidden treasures lurking within.
