Corvettes at Carlisle – Carlisle, Pennsylvania

September 1st, 2010 by Stu

A while back I did a few posts about my father’s quest for the vintage Jaguar of his dreams. From the many shows and renowned restoration shops we visited, I learned a heap about early XK cars like the 120 and E-Type. Fast forward to the present, where dad has substituted classic American muscle cars in where the gentlemanly British roadsters used to be. We’re now focused on finding a big block C2 Corvette with Knock-off Kelsey-Hayes wheels and side pipes loud enough to irritate the neighbors a little bit. So we did what any other sane person with Vettes on the brain would do…headed to Carlisle to check out the Corvette show of Corvette shows, soak up a little brand culture, learn more about collectable big blocks and perhaps score ourselves a new (well, new to us) Corvette.

Driving through the downtown area surrounding the fairgrounds was surreal. There were Corvettes absolutely everywhere. New ones, old ones, nice ones, ratty ones…there were all kinds. The beautiful Summer afternoon was filled with car talk amongst friends and screaming V8 engines being tested on the dynamometer. Bright eyed locals lined the sidewalks, watching and pointing as all the Vettes rumbled by in every color imaginable. There was even a parade on Saturday to honor legendary racer John Fitch, who in 1960 co-drove the first Corvette, the #3 Briggs Cunningham car, to ever capture a class win at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Some of the more entrepreneurial townies who resided near the fairgrounds turned their driveways and backyards into paid parking lots and spent the weekend enthusiastically waving people in. The fact that they did this shirtless, beer in hand made it all that much more enjoyable.

See how we made out with a classic Vette and check out the many sights and sounds from the show after the jump. And if you really want to laugh, get a load of our Corvettes at Carlisle featured gallery with more cheeky vanity plates than you can shake a stick at.

Mini Cooper S [John Cooper Works] – Spring Street, NYC

August 25th, 2010 by Ian

Spotted this John Cooper Works Mini that is mightier than the rest on Spring Street in Soho. Unlike someone we know, this owner was able to control him or herself from covering the entire body in carbon fiber accents and ridiculously oversized rear wings. The result is a boy racer with a tasteful level of modifications that really emphasizes this hot hatchback’s ability to get up and go. All of the modern day Minis are pretty great thanks to their agile handling, great fuel economy, relative light weight, free scheduled manintenance and famous BMW fit & finish, but I particularly adore these supercharged gen 1 models. They somehow appear cleaner and less bulbous than the twin scroll turbo gen 2 models currently in dealers

Original Mini Cooper – Sun Valley, CA

August 23rd, 2010 by Mike

I recently had the opportunity to go exploring in the streets of Sun Valley during a recent trip. Walking around, sun blazing, I began to recognize a common theme of expansive properties, dirt yards, roosters, mammals, at least three vehicles per household, at least two of them sitting immobile with the hoods up, horse trailers, boats and Sea Doos, all with months of dirt on them, baking in the sun.

I happen upon a yard full of kiddie pools with gangs of ducks wading in them and feel the need to remind myself that I’m only 15 minutes from Downtown LA. Across the street, behind a locked gate, is this great looking Mini of the vintage variety. As I’m admiring it, and enjoying the fact that it’s on Dayton wire wheels, the owner pulls up riding a mini 80cc dirtbike with extra loud exhaust mods. Late twenties/early thirties, shirtless, silver chain around his neck, heavily tatted, arriving home from the liquor store with a large grocery bag in hand (meaning he rode to the store on public roads with no helmet, and shopped in the store with no shirt on). He’s polite and thanked me for complimenting the car and then proceeded to open up the gate to expose two trailers on the property (Airstream and regular RV). There is no house to be found.

Maybe he lives in the Airstream and cooks meth in the RV? Or maybe he’s just a nice guy with no hangups about living in a trailer in a dirt lot as long as he can have his dream car. Weigh in below with your thoughts.

Fiat 500 – West 37th Street, NYC

August 19th, 2010 by Stu

Pictured here, a landmark in Italian engineering and distinguished member of the city car hall of fame. Measuring just under 10 feet and weighing in at a bantam 1,168 pounds, this 1970 Fiat 500 Lusso (Italian for luxury) is compact enough to slip into an elevator shaft and light enough to lift into parking spaces. Well, maybe not. But it’s absurdly small and only by standing next to one can you get a true sense of the pint sized dimensions. Hell, a modern day Mini Cooper, a full 2 feet longer, looks like an Escalade next to this thing. Believe it or not, this seemingly spartan Lusso represents a more sophisticated 500 complete with revised interior and exterior styling “designed to meet the demands of a clientele looking for a car that was more comprehensive, more customized and more ‘luxurious’”. We can’t wait to start spotting modern, or nuova, 500s once they hit our shores later this year. The retro Italian hatchbacks, which have been on sale in Europe since 2007, should be hip enough to give Mini a real run for their money.

Is anyone else suddenly in the mood for an espresso and a cigarette?

Ciao

Pontiac Trans Am – East 37th Street, NYC

August 11th, 2010 by Stu

This vintage Trans Am spotted on East 37th is utterly fabulous in a Joe Dirt meets Tawny Kitaen sort of way. The t-top, gold paint and massive firebird arching its wings on the hood are priceless.

Chevy Styleline Deluxe Sport Coupe – Forest Grove, Oregon

July 27th, 2010 by Emir

I spotted this great looking 51 Chevy parked outside the Forest Grove Concour d’Elegeance last weekend. Its brilliant blue paint, elegant use of chrome, and smooth curves had me stopped like a dear caught in the headlights. And what an interior. I hope to look this sporty when I’m 60 years old. In case any of my rant now has you lusting for one of these, this baby happens to be for sale and can be in your driveway for the low low price of $15K. Any interested parties can email haywood53@gmail.com.

*note: price does not include Man on the Move broker fee of 6%

Buick Skylark Custom – SE 49th and SE Division, Portland, OR

June 21st, 2010 by Emir

This classic Buick Skylark Custom was so insanely perfect in every way that I was almost afraid to breathe when stepping up to snap a few photos on this dreary Portland afternoon. The chrome, trim pieces and killer mag wheels all looked better than new. And while I’m usually a violent opponent of vinyl roofs, this one looks pretty damn good transposed against the Bahama Blue paint’s subtle sheen.
