Fiat 500 – West 37th Street, NYC

August 19th, 2010 by Stu

Pictured here, a landmark in Italian engineering and distinguished member of the city car hall of fame. Measuring just under 10 feet and weighing in at a bantam 1,168 pounds, this 1970 Fiat 500 Lusso (Italian for luxury) is compact enough to slip into an elevator shaft and light enough to lift into parking spaces. Well, maybe not. But it’s absurdly small and only by standing next to one can you get a true sense of the pint sized dimensions. Hell, a modern day Mini Cooper, a full 2 feet longer, looks like an Escalade next to this thing. Believe it or not, this seemingly spartan Lusso represents a more sophisticated 500 complete with revised interior and exterior styling “designed to meet the demands of a clientele looking for a car that was more comprehensive, more customized and more ‘luxurious'”. We can’t wait to start spotting modern, or nuova, 500s once they hit our shores later this year. The retro Italian hatchbacks, which have been on sale in Europe since 2007, should be hip enough to give Mini a real run for their money.

Is anyone else suddenly in the mood for an espresso and a cigarette?

GMC Value Van – East 81st Street, NYC

March 5th, 2010 by Ian

I was charmed by this old “walk in” delivery van parked alongside an Upper East Side fire hydrant. Perhaps my favorite little detail is the windshield wiper mechanism. It looks like the bell that rang when it was time to change periods in high school. As I approached the old van and started taking pictures, a scruffy, tough looking older gentleman aggressively communicated “no pictures”. Eventually I convinced him to let me snap the van but not him. Maybe he is wanted or something. All I know is never to mess with anyone who owns and operates a blade sharpening business out of a van.

Mini Cooper – 10 Freeway, Culver City

Culver City Cooper

It’s funny how Minis can make everyday vehicles around them look a bit silly. Even though it appears the car is standing still, we were actually traveling next to it at 75 mph. This super clean pre-BMW Mini is modified just enough to affirm you’re seeing something special – but your attention isn’t drawn to any one mod.

They don’t call it smart for nothing.

Smart Fortwo Brabus – West 93rd Street, NYC

smart fortwo brabus

The diminutive fortwo hit US shores with a bang last year. Sales during the micro brand’s inaugural year exceeded 24,000 units, not bad considering the multi-decade market low we are currently experiencing. To keep the momentum going, Smart hooked up with well-known German tuning house Brabus to squeeze a little more fun to drive attitude out of the little Fortwo. The mini-but-macho result is the Smart Fortwo Brabus, which will be limited to 1,500 units.
