Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 Convertible – West 23rd Street, NYC

July 29th, 2010 by Aaron

I found this 540 HP snake charmer tucked away in front of a Chelsea office building one sunny afternoon. The black and red hot rod almost looked guilty, as if it had been out speeding and doing smokey burnouts all afternoon. Or maybe the owner simply needed a parking space so he could run inside to grab something. Either way, I think we can all agree, this drop top ain’t a half bad way to get around town.

Nissan Leaf – Skylight West Gallery, NYC

February 16th, 2010 by Ian

New York City was particularly green on the night of February 11th. Well, the nightlife was at least. Not only did Nissan hold a promotional event for their soon-to-be-released Leaf electric vehicle, but the New York Academy of Sciences hosted an expert panel to discuss NYC’s infrastructure readiness for the flurry of EV’s on the way. In case you didn’t know, the Leaf will be the first affordable (i.e. not a Tesla), mass market EV to hit the streets when it rolls into dealerships this December. Yes, I know…Chevy’s Volt is due out first in November. But the Volt is technically not a pure EV – it’s a range extended EV. That means an internal combustion engine, or ICE for short, adds longevity to the electric motor when the battery is kaput. Only time, and consumer demand, will tell how drastically these alt energy vehicles will affect energy consumption in major cities. But there is certainly no shortage of buzz on the matter. More pics from the snazzy Nissan Leaf event after the jump.

Under the hood: Pierre Kanter

November 16th, 2009 by Stu

Pictured – Pierre Kanter, General Motors PR man, in his 1961 Lincoln Continental.

1961 Lincoln Continental

I know what you’re thinking – why is a General Motors PR guy cruising around downtown Manhattan in a Lincoln? They can lock you up for that sort of thing in Detroit. Pierre Kanter is no traitor though. In fact, the French-born car guy and 15 year GM marketer called up VP of Global Design Ed Welburn for his blessing before making the purchase two years ago. “It was between the ’61 Lincoln and a ‘59 Caddy Coupe de Ville. Welburn loved the Caddy but told me I couldn’t pass up an opportunity to own a Continental.”

2010 Harleys – West 26th Street, NYC

October 16th, 2009 by Ian

Harley1

Just days before Harley announced the shuttering of its Buell sport bike brand, the top brass from Milwaukee was in Manhattan showing off their 2010 models to socialites who will probably never buy one. The launch party took place at Ainsworth, a hip new joint that Urban Daddy calls “the harmonious marriage of a gastropub and the sportsbook at Caesars”. The guy guy venue, with its plethora of sports-playing plasmas and use of wrought iron and wood, was the perfect venue for a brand that was popularized by outlaws.

Moto Guzzi 1000S – West 23rd Street, NYC

September 29th, 2009 by Ian

Moto Guzzi 1

We spotted this ultra-rare Moto Guzzi 1000S on West 23rd in Chelsea. The striking green and black livery, which extends from the sheet metal all the way through to the V7 frame and swing arm, represented one of two color combos available (orange and black was the other) during the brief production run (‘89-’93) of just 1,360 units. Although this green hornet is aged the better part of 20 years, the design was considered retro at the time, paying homage to the ‘74 750S and ‘75 740S3 models.

Land Rover Defender 90 – West 20th Street, NYC

September 16th, 2009 by Ian

Defender 90 1

The Defender 90 is already a pretty capable little ute. But equipped with Hella lights up top, added fogs in the grille, supersized hazard lights on the fenders and a Warn winch up front, this green hard top spotted on West 20th looks ready to take on just about anything Manhattan can muster. So watch out flash floods. Pot holes, eat your heart out. And cabbies…you better steer clear.  This all terrain warrior is ready for action, or a natural disaster, whichever comes first.

New York Tesla Gallery – West 25th Street, NYC

September 10th, 2009 by Ian

Tesla

Tesla’s Manhattan dealership is live and kicking and the less-is-more decor screams high priced artwork not electric sports car retailer. Although that seems to have been the point in Tesla choosing to open shop in Chelsea’s art district rather than the obvious Park Avenue (Ferrari/Maserati, Audi Forum, Mercedes) or “dealer row” locations that all the other brands have flocked to. They even go as far as to brand the dealership, which used to be an actual gallery, as the “New York Tesla Gallery”.

Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder – West 26th Street, NYC

August 21st, 2009 by Ian

Lambo 1

Lamborghini’s best-selling Gallardo has been a bit of headline whore lately and not all of them good. Recent news surrounding the “entry level” exotic from Sant’Agata Bolognese range from a lemon law refund check, to a special RWD commemorative edition, to a new Gallardo-only racing series, and even a hybrid electric variant coming in 2015. Seeing this stunning white Spyder on 26th street reminds us what all the fuss is about.

Porsche 911 Carrera 4S Convertible – W25th Street, NYC

June 13th, 2009 by Ian

porsche-carrera-4sPorsche likes to brand their topless, AWD, uprated (that’s the S) 997-series Carrera with a tagline that reads “The sky is the limit”. Apparently the owner of this “Speed Yellow” example doesnt much enjoy Porsche’s advertising
