NY Cycle Show Wrap-Up – Javits Convention Center, NYC

February 8th, 2010 by Stu

This year’s New York Motorcycle Show may not have been all that significant from a new model introduction standpoint, but that doesn’t mean Javits wasn’t packed to the brim with eye candy. We already brought you some tastey shots of Confederate’s B120 Fighter and Wraith but Progressive Insurance also had a kick ass booth full of one-off choppers and other custom creations. Equally cool was the Sucker Punch Sally and Campagna T-Rex displays. Hell, Ducati even put on a little fashion show to highlight their new Multistrada and line of motorcycle-inspired apparel.  Check out all the goodies after the jump.

BMW X6 – West 14th Street, NYC

September 1st, 2009 by Ian

X6 1

We spotted this BMW X6 on 14th street in the Meatpacking District. The sexy soft-roader with a chopped roofline was BMW’s answer to the rising trend toward combining coupe-like profiles with utter non-sports cars. Before X6 hit the scene, the trend had applied almost exclusively to sedans like Mercedes CLS and Passat CC. Although BMW was not the first automaker to fuse coupes and crossovers – Infiniti did it back in 2003 with the precocious FX35 and FX45.

BMW 535i Sports Wagon – 7th Avenue, NYC

May 29th, 2009 by Ian

bmw-535i-sports-wagonSpends his days in a Manhattan boardroom and weekends in Ditch Plains riding the long ones into shore. Not a terrible way to live in our humble opinion. A diverse vehicle for an active lifestyle, the BMW 535i Xdrive Sports Wagon offers all the utility of an estate, the performance of a sports car (twin-turbocharged, 300HP V Inline 6) and AWD capability of an off roader. Those who don’t embrace European wagons need to take notice.

VW Phaeton – 5th Avenue, NYC

April 30th, 2009 by Stu

vw-phaeton-5th-ave-You’re looking at VW’s ill-fated attempt to compete against arch rivals Mercedes and BMW. Despite the economy car badge sitting prominently on the hood, the full size, hand assembled Phaeton is all luxury and easily crossed the $100,000 barrier when equipped with the optional W12 engine. It even shared a platform and manufacturing site with Bentley’s Continental Flying Spur sedan (VW owns Bentley). Americans were not convinced though and Phaeton was promptly taken off the U.S. market after 2 years of sluggish sales performance.

BMW R75/5 – Spring Street, NYC

Vintage Bimmers are all the rage once you head south of Houston. They have a rugged appeal that feels right at home in a concrete jungle. This 1972 R75/5 has shocks lined in chunky rubber and a chrome 4 gallon gas tank (introduced that year) that many say resembled the look of a toaster oven.

clockwise from top left: 1977 BMW 320i by Roy Lichtenstein; 1986 BMW 635CSi by Robert Rauschenberg; 1979 BMW M1 by Andy Warhol; 1976 BMW 3.0 CSL by Frank Stella

Our very own Grand Central Station was one of the stops along BMW’s traveling Art Car exhibit.  These four famous BMW’s were formerly used as blank canvases by world renowned artists,  Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Frank Stella, and Robert Raushenberg.   The BMW art car project began in 1975 when race car driver Hervé Poulain commisioned an American artist to paint his BMW, and today there are 16 vehicles in the BMW art car stable.  These cars have graced some of the worlds most prestigious museums including the Louvre in Paris, and the Guggenheim in NY and Bilboa.

BMW 2002 – Spring Street, NYC

March 10th, 2009 by Ian

bmw-2002
Its amazing to watch your visual interpretation of a design change over time. When a next generation model is introduced, the fresh details tend to make the older iteration appear dated and out of touch. But this iconic BMW’s simple yet uninterrupted design always has, and always will, look fantastic. From the basic 3 box design to the early interpretation of the twin kidney grille, the 2002 (1968 – 1977) is a true classic. Seen here in original, unrestored condition, it looks like the owner uses the car every chance he gets.
