Oldsmobile Toronado – NW 19th and Kearney, Portland

January 21st, 2010 by Stu

Movies and cars are alike in the sense that sequels are never as good as the original. This glorious gen 1 Toronado spotted by our Portland sharp shooter is evidence. The two-ton Grand Touring coupe from the now defunct GM division is a rolling testament to America’s former foothold over the automotive industry. Emotional styling, grand proportions and one bad ass mother of an engine stuffed under the hood. Things really went south in ‘71 as Toronado’s exterior design began to mirror more luxurious (and boring) GM sister vehicles from the era, like Buick Riviera and Cadillac Eldorado.

Chevy Camaro Z28 Type LT – Holt Ave, Los Angeles

January 5th, 2010 by Nick

CAMARO Z28 TYPE LT - HOLT AVE, LAThe dented rear fender from prom night ’77. The cigarette burn from a drunken night at the disco on new years ’80. The scratch down the passenger door from shopping kart bowling on a warm night in ’83. The stories these survivors tell through their scars and battle wounds get silenced during a restoration, and the soft whispers of debauchery fall on deaf ears under a glossy coat of candy.

Pontiac Firebird – 4th Street, NYC

January 1st, 2010 by Ian

Firebird1

And you thought Lieutenant Bullitt was the only bad ass who could pull off a green muscle car. Well this Firebird is more of an emerald than dark Highland Green but let’s not split hairs. It seems New Yorkers have an affinity for Firebirds painted in bold colors.

Custom Chopper – Montigue Street, Brooklyn Heights

December 15th, 2009 by Austin

Custom Chopper in Brooklyn Heights

This Brooklyn chopper stands out like a skinny girl at a Jenny Craig meeting. From the hand-tooled leather saddle and handmade pipes to the intricate paint scheme and hand formed tank & rear fender, the design detail is simply exquisite. Further supporting this bike’s ultra clean looks, the designer omitted the front brake and fender. Hundreds of man hours and a silly amount of cash have likely gone into its construction. And as you might be able to tell, form definitely trumps function. Your spine will pay for looks this good – the rigid tail and lack of any suspension underneath the seat mean this baby is a real buckaroo over the city streets. This custom chopper is what we call TTT – Tavern To Tavern.

H-D Sportster Iron 883 – Elizabeth Street, NYC

November 25th, 2009 by Ian

Harley Nightster1

Harley’s entry level Sportster has never been cooler thanks to special edition models like this Iron 883 ($7,999) and its 1200 CC Nightster ($9,999) counterpart. From the 13 spoke cast aluminum wheels and black denim paint to the chopped rear fender and front fork gaiters, it’s amazing how seemingly minor changes to color and trim can dramatically transform the character of a motorcycle. Not to say that we don’t like the base Sportster (883 Low) but its got nothing on this blacked out beauty.

Ford GT – Staple Street, NYC

November 6th, 2009 by Ian

FordGT2

Unlike marine biologists studying Great White Shark movement and migration, we at ManOnTheMove cannot tag our vehicle subjects for tracking purposes. And owners of fine rides like this Ford GT thoroughly appreciate that. But this particular piece of American exotica looks familiar, like we have spotted it before. We usually don’t like to snap the same ride twice, but exceptions can be made for something as sexy as this.

1965 Ford Mustang GT Convertible – West Broadway, NYC

October 20th, 2009 by Ian

Mustang1

The owner of this cherry red ‘Stang couldn’t have chosen a better parking space considering the high end neighborhood and for sale sign in the windshield. In fact, this perennial pony car is so perfect in every way that it seems entirely plausible the restoration shop unloaded it directly from the flatbed in front of Cipriani’s posh West Broadway location upon completion. We are not sure if there were any takers but the restaurant’s deep pocketed clientele cast more than a few stares at the gussied up American icon as they enjoyed one of the precious few days left for outdoor dining.

2010 Harleys – West 26th Street, NYC

October 16th, 2009 by Ian

Harley1

Just days before Harley announced the shuttering of its Buell sport bike brand, the top brass from Milwaukee was in Manhattan showing off their 2010 models to socialites who will probably never buy one. The launch party took place at Ainsworth, a hip new joint that Urban Daddy calls “the harmonious marriage of a gastropub and the sportsbook at Caesars”. The guy guy venue, with its plethora of sports-playing plasmas and use of wrought iron and wood, was the perfect venue for a brand that was popularized by outlaws.

1968 Chevrolet Chevelle SS – Greenwich Street, NYC

September 24th, 2009 by Ian

ChevelleThe mid to late 60s were a good time to get American muscle on the cheap. The 1968 Chevelle SS, for instance, offered a honkin 396-cid V8 as standard equipment for less than $3,000. You can’t even get a decent paint job these days for that kind of money. ‘68 also saw a major redesign and was the last year that the Chevelle SS was offered as a stand alone model (For 1969, the SS 396 became an option package on all Chevelles). The new design took on the popular Coke Bottle shape and was characterized by a short rear deck, stretched out hood and semi-fastback look in the rear. This flamed out example was caught loitering on Greenwich in all of its customized glory.

Chevy Nova and Ford Falcon Van – Fillmore Place, Brooklyn

August 20th, 2009 by Michael

Nova and Falcon 1

Spotting one classic is good but capturing two in the same frame is even better. That’s just what happened while strolling Fillmore Place, a one-street historical district in Williamsburg that Henry Miller described as “the most enchanting street I have ever seen in all my life” in his 1938 semi-autobiographical novel “Tropic of Capricorn”.
