Big Rigs Invade Soho – Prince Street, NYC

February 22nd, 2012 by Stu

Have you ever run into one of those massive crane rigs that routinely hoist ginormous building materials 30 or 40 stories into the air in dense urban areas? It’s quite a spectacle and construction workers often stop pedestrian traffic while the crane is operating to avoid falling objects from landing on top of the heads of unsuspecting tourists. Ever wonder how massive cranes like this get transported to the cobblestone-laden, utterly narrow streets of SoHo of all places? You’re looking at how. Good old fashioned muscle from names like Mack and International.

It doesn’t get a lot tougher than this. I get memories of Stallone in Over the Top just looking at these things.

Chevy C/10 Pick Up – Monmouth Beach, New Jersey

February 20th, 2012 by Stu

Looking at this beautifully maintained, two-tone Chevy C/K pick up, spotted in Monmouth Beach by one of our Man on the Move faithful, kinda makes me want to dress head to toe in denim and open up a ranch somewhere. I guess you can call that powerful design.

Thanks for the awesome find Devrin.

Paul’s Junkyard @ Twilight – Lancaster, CA

February 17th, 2012 by Stu

Pictured Above: “Swept Away” - Night photography from Troy Paiva - Old yellow school bus at Paul’s Junkyard (Night, 2-minute exposure. Full moon, natural xenon flashlight and red-gelled strobe).

Bet you didn’t know junkyards could be this charming. Well, that’s what happens when you combine a starry California night with the amazing talents of photographer Troy Paiva. We’ve covered Troy’s junkyard exploits before, last time at Pearsonville. This time around, Troy did his rounds at Paul’s Junkyard in the high desert near Lancaster, CA.  As you can tell from the amazing photos displayed here, there were plenty of cool old cars, buses, airplanes, and even tanks, to focus a lens on. What’s interesting about this yard versus others is how many old movie cars and props managed to wind up there. Perhaps it’s the proximity to Hollywood.

Troy actually holds night photography workshops at this junkyard a few times a year in case you’re interested in seeing how it’s done. The next one is just around the corner. Email Troy for more info.

“The Forgotten Spy”

Super-rare Ghia-bodied 1960 Chrysler Imperial Limousine, customized as a prop car for the movie “Lemony Snicket.” Possibly the coolest car interior I’ve ever seen anywhere. That it’s decaying in a junkyard makes it even more insanely cool! Yeah, you really need to sign onto our workshop mailing list so you can shoot here too.

“Interstate 5 by Airliner”

Exotic debris, piled up at Paul’s Junkyard, site of my upcoming night photography and light painting workshop. A totally unique experience in the photography workshop universe, day or night. Night, 4 minute exposure. Full moon, lime-gelled and natural LED flashlight.

Man on the Move Goes To Portugal – Sights & Sounds

January 22nd, 2012 by Stu

One of our Man on the Move faithful snapped this duo of blue beauties on a recent trip to Portugal. The iconic E-Type is a Mark III, and boasts a powerful V12 underneath its louvered bonnet. The story behind its 5.3L V12 is actually quite interesting and dates back to the 50s. The Fiat 500 is, of course, unmistakable no matter what country you live in. Nonetheless, an awesome sighting every time.

Thanks for the great snaps Michal. Your adventures across the globe are always welcome here.

Car Spotting, Nantucket Style – Nantucket, Mass

January 6th, 2012 by Stu

Miami is known for its flashy, look-at-me exotics. Beverly Hills, its opulent, and often times chauffer-driven situations. The Hamptons, of course, soccer moms and stock brokers in standard issue Range Rovers. And let’s not forget the left coasters and their all-season drop tops. But what springs to mind when pondering the preferred method of transport on the charming island of Nantucket? If you were thinking glorious wood-clad Jeep Grand Wagoneers and vintage Toyota Land Cruisers then you deserve a gold star and a pat on the back.

New England is so utterly charming in the Winter. And these rough and tumble classics only add to the landscape’s appeal.

Lotus Evora S – Tribeca Alleyway, NYC

December 1st, 2011 by Stu

Pictured here, the latest track-ready assault weapon from the mad scientists at Lotus. The Evora S takes the already dangerous Evora 2+2 and ups the performance ante by bolting a big fat blower onto its mid-mounted six cylinder powerplant. The result is whiplash-inducing levels of punch and enough grip to hang on for dear life at nearly any speed. All this with menacing looks to match.

After a weekend of high speed twists and turns in the Berkshire Mountains, we headed to a moody alley in Tribeca for a proper photo shoot.

Ornamentations Vol.4 – The Skylark

November 29th, 2011 by Stu

Acrylic on canvas - 20”X16”

Another addition to the “Ornamentations” series by car nut and photorealist Bob Petillo. This time a 1954 Buick Skylark glistening in the mid day sun. Before the days of the Buick tri-shield emblems was the variation on V8 symbols such as this one. The broad chrome base created a reflecting surface for the sky and emblem. Bob says, “It’s the kind of thing that really captures the beauty or mirroring images.  It’s Nirvana for artists with OCD”

Secret Supercar Society Rally – Blue Hill Farms, New York

November 22nd, 2011 by Stu

Four years ago we were invited to participate in a supercar rally that saw 20+ exotics gathered at a secret location in Westchester County for a quick but extremely high profile run to Greenwich. And sure enough, we received an impromptu call from organizers that the event was on for the end of September. To entice us further, they offered up the keys to a 670 horsepower Ferrari 599 GTO to pilot for the rally. With only 599 copies of these street legal versions of the Ferrari XX race cars ever produced, we were elated. However, on the appointed day, the weather Gods put an end to that deal. Nevertheless, the wait was worth it as the event recently took place on a recent Sunday without a cloud in the sky. The bad news, the 599 GTO was no longer available. We were offered a Ferrari California instead. Consolation prizes should all be this terrible.

Shrouded in secrecy, we received an email a few days before the event and were told to meet at the breathtaking Blue Hill Farms at Stone Barns, a working farm and well-known restaurant (formerly part of the Rockefeller Estate). Over the next hour, one by one, another dozen extotics appeared including a red 25th Anniversary Lamborghini Countach, a couple of Porsche Carrera GTs and a Silver Ferrari 599 GTO (we were envious). A while later, I instantly recognized the arrival of a Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano which was specially built by the factory for the father of the ex-Pininfarina designer, Jason Castriota. Well-dressed groups of diners at the restaurant were surprised and delighted to be able to stroll among this gathering of supercars.

We were instructed to head north on the Saw Mill River Parkway which was both scenic and twisty, but showing its age with a very narrow lanes and even a narrower center divider. Early on we were taunted by one of the Porsche Carrera GTs, who easily out accelerated our Ferrari as we shot up the entrance ramp, but I think our exhaust note was better, especially inside the many overpasses we encountered en route. We continued at a pretty good clip through Bedford, NY on our way to Greenwich, CT. Unfortunately, we were blocked by a particularly slow moving sedan thereby reducing the almost 10,000 horsepower behind me to what looked like a supercar funeral procession.

A little further down the scenic road, we jumped on the Merritt Parkway, one of the nation’s few highways on the National Register of Historic Places. Our “Grigio Silverstone” Ferrari California kicked hard with each pull of the right paddle and its acceleration pushed us back into the sumptuous leather buckets. I was delirious and did not want to back out of the throttle. In fact, now that I reflect, I stayed in it for a bit longer than I should have. Suddenly, a Ferrari F-40, and an Orange Gallardo Spider blew by and gave us a reality check.

Several miles up a local road we arrived at our final destination, the Doral Arrowwood Resort’s 114 acres in Rye Brook, NY. I think that we scared the pants off the valet parking staff as we decided to do a fly by of the Doral’s circular driveway on our way to the parking lot. Elapsed time: exactly 1 hour. Oops, one straggler, a Rolls Royce Phantom, came in a few minutes later (hey, what do you expect).
