VW Thing – Santa Monica Blvd, West Hollywood

VW Thing - Santa Monica

There’s just something about a car being so damn ugly it’s beautiful. If this is a grandfather, the grandson is a steroid-using, metro-sexual, in-the-gym-5-days-a-week H2. Part of “the greatest generation”, where form followed function, this thing sits on the porch, shaking his head, asking himself, “where the hell did we go wrong?” You can call it dated, boxy, ugly or utilitarian, but whatever you do, don’t dare call it unoriginal.

Under the hood: Brady Erickson

December 9th, 2009 by Nick

Pictured – Brady Erickson, lead singer of LA-based The Ross Sea Party, in his 1969 Porsche 912.

Brady Porsche 912

When people see older cars in LA, it’s usually on a Sunday. Some old guy taking his prized possession out for a quick run to get the dust bunnies off of it. Once the ride is over, he puts it back, shuts the garage and drives his Lexus for the rest of the week. Older cars are just harder to deal with. After all, the last thing you want to worry about on the 110 is a hot engine or squealing transmission. Well, someone once told that to Brady Erickson, the singer of Los Angeles based The Ross Sea Party, but I don’t think he listened, or cared. His daily driver is a 1969 Porsche 912 and he drives it all over town… EVERYDAY. It’s his only car.

VW Bug – Sherbourne Blvd., LA

November 24th, 2009 by Nick

VW1

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a bug that hasn’t been customized in some form or another. This one looks as if it just drove off the set of M*A*S*H, serial number and all. It’s customizations are a bit wacky, but done with a quiet elegance. Just enough to let you know somebody in there cares, but understated to the point of making you guess if this thing is, in fact, stock. I wonder if the luggage rack doubles as a machine gun mount?

Mercedes 220D – Holt Avenue, Los Angeles

November 19th, 2009 by Nick

Mercedes 220D

A little wink to those who get it – a beacon in a never-ending sea of mediocrity.  The nondescript cars on either side of this diesel Merc act as the foil to its diamond-in-the-rough nonchalance. This car isn’t screaming to be seen. It’s not striking a pose on Melrose. It’s tucked away on a quiet street allowing the Gods to shine down their praise and hear it whisper, “yo, seriously… I’m rad. Keep driving.”

Mystery Ride Revealed – Sherbourne Avenue, LA

November 18th, 2009 by Nick

mystery ride

It would have been great to bring you the exact make and model but this mystery ride is locked up tight and I don’t need a pissed off owner chasing me down the street with a 12 guage. I did manage to find a piece of the car cover that wasn’t being held down with a brick though – it revealed what appears to be a brand name or race team logo tattooed onto the side sill. Anyone recognize it? Either way, the plexiglass and abundance of scuffs reek of a kit that has seen its share of track time. Thanks to all those who weighed in.

Under the Hood: Bill Sack

WHY DID YOU GET INVOLVED WITH CRAFT AND WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR IT?

Nobody was doing a workwear presentation properly in my mind.  It was all too costumey.  Pete and I wanted to do a Japanese-Americana workwear aesthetic but make it look real, and wearable.

WHAT’S THE STORY WITH SCORING THE TRUCK? YOU FIND IT IN A BARN? HOLD SOMEONE UP FOR IT?

I acquired the truck from a former employer.  It had been the shop truck for a denim brand, to remain nameless….

IF YOU WEREN’T DRIVING THIS YOU’D BE DRIVING…

I’d love an early 50′s coupe, or an early 60′s Cadillac.

Ferrari Testarossa – Gregory blvd, Beverly Hills

October 30th, 2009 by Nick

512TR

From the cheese grater side intakes to the glorious 1980s pop up style headlights, this baby is one of the more exotic models the Prancing Horse has ever put out. So it almost seems tragic to let this sports car icon wither away in the California sunshine. But its beautiful decay is also an indication of how much fun the owner has had behind the wheel. Nothing tragic about that. Although it does need some obvious TLC judging by the cobwebs cluttering the Pininfarina-designed side strakes and leaves caught in the engine cover. Common man, wash your damn Ferrari.

1939 Indian Chief – Washington Blvd., LA

October 21st, 2009 by Nick

Indian2

So this is what they looked like when they actually rolled out of Springfield. This ’39 Injin is pure class, through and through. And no, that’s not some old rich guy riding it because his mechanic told him to get it out of the garage once a year, that’s a 24 year-old with perhaps more style than horsepower, whose other car is… well… this. But hey, this thing is purely for thundering around town looking for trouble and not dragging off greens with the rest of the Ruff Riders.
