A Classic American Tale: Exploring the SouthWest in a 911

December 6th, 2012 by John

Call it what you will. Man and machine. The open road. Easy Rider. No matter how you slice it, the great American road trip is a tale as old as time. Well, maybe not that old but pretty damn old. One of the great motivators for an epic road trip is the acquisition of a new vehicle. But not just any vehicle…something special. A previously loved [marketing speak for used] Porsche 911 does the trick nicely. Me and my ride needed to get to San Diego for the start a new job. Along the way, the plan was to pick up a custom surf board in Seattle for all those gnarly California tubes. Couple that in with the fact that my buddy has never seen the American Southwest and you have a recipe for 5,500 blissful miles. The only soundtrack we needed on this journey was the melodic hum of a flat six.

Bullit Mustang Look Alike – Mason Street, San Francisco

March 7th, 2012 by John

Sightings do not get a whole lot cooler than this. A Highland Green ’67 Mustang Fastback spotted in the very city where the Bullit namesake was derived. Filming the iconic chase scene took three weeks and resulted in a mere 9 minutes and 42 seconds of film. But the legend will live on in the hearts and minds of enthusiasts forever.

Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4: Shore Club, Miami (FL)

February 9th, 2012 by John

Say hello to Aventador, Lamborghini’s new HBIC (Head Bull In Charge) and the sinister replacement vehicle for the former Lambo king Murcielago. Her menacing matte black finish is straight from the factory. So is the 691HP fire breathing V12 residing beneath those sexy glass slats (first all-new V12 in almost 15 years). The whole thing is good for nearly 220 MPH and, if that’s not enough, shifts faster than you can say whiplash.

How appropriate, we spotted this one at the posh Shore Club in Miami. I wonder how big a douche the driver is.

Disintegrated Porsche 911 – Malibu, California

September 27th, 2011 by John

Ever wonder where neglected old Porsches go to die? If this sorry excuse for a 911 is any evidence, the posh Malibu hills are a desirable final resting place. Even the trailer sitting alongside it is completely rusted through. Animals have the ASPCA to look out for their well-being, but who is watching out for once magnificent rides like this? Where is their Sarah McLachlan? We have seen some basket cases before, but this one takes the cake.

What a waste.

Hamptons Car Spotting – Southampton, NY

August 4th, 2011 by John

It never ceases to amaze me, the Hamptons that it. Within 5 minutes of heading into town to grab a cup of morning joe, I spot a Cobra, Diablo and other assorted treasures pictured after the jump.

You’ve got to love the Summer.

BBQs, hot dogs, fire works and ’57 Chevys. It doesn’t get more patriotic than that.

Mercedes 600 SWB Limousine – East 63rd Street, NYC

May 27th, 2011 by John

Somewhere in Stuttgart, near the Black Forrest, there are a bunch of trees missing. Where did they all go? Into the lavishly appointed interior of this Mercedes 600, that’s where. The stately German luxury saloon is dripping with beautifully crafted interior finishes and has been chauffeuring around well-to-do individuals for the better part of 50 years (produced from ’63 -’81). Everyone from the Pope, Coco Chanel and Elvis to Communist leaders and African revolutionaries. As I’m sure you will agree, there is no disputing the stateliness behind one of these. This gun metal grey over blood red example was spotted on East 63rd, in front of The Lowell, an equally stately hotel with beds that start at about $600 per night.

Have a great holiday weekend!

Ford Auto Show Pre Party – Metropolitan Pavilion, NYC

April 22nd, 2011 by John

Ford used a live musical performance from Grammy-award-winning Train to celebrate the pre-autoshow unveiling of their 2013 Taurus large sedan in Manhattan earlier this week. The car is not all-new from the ground up but features some updated design cues, improved MPG ratings and an all new 4-cylinder eco-boost engine option to keep the feds at bay. We’re not party planners or anything, but Metropolitan Pavilion seemed like an odd venue for the event considering that Porsche was throwing a similar event right next door (see yesterday’s post).

We woud ordinarily open wide and yawn when thinking about grocery-getting sedans like Taurus, but this thing looks pretty good. Certainly more exciting to look at than an Accord or Camry from an everyday driver standpoint. Of particular interest is the SHO, the ultimate sleeper car, packing a hot new grille, updated 20 inch wheels and a carryover 365 HP Ecoboost V6. Ford says its the sportiest Taurus to ever bear the SHO name.

We’re inclined to agree.

Jaguar E-Type – East 63rd Street, NYC

April 14th, 2011 by John

There are only two Automobiles in the Museum of Modern Art‘s permanent collection, a WWII era Jeep and a Jaguar E-Type. Enzo Ferrari, the man responsible for some of the most inspired automobiles in history, called it “The most beautiful car ever made”. Its roots were based in Jaguar’s victories at LeMans in the 1950s and it has a main role in that legendary song about Mulholland Drive…”And then I saw the Jag slide into the curve I know I’ll never forget that horrible sight I guess I found out for myself that everyone was right, won’t come back from Dead Man’s Curve.” Impressive by today’s standards, it did 0-60 in seven seconds, had a top speed of 149 mph and somehow managed to eek out 21 mpg without the use of fancy shmancy direct injection systems or dual scroll turbos as has become the norm today. The bullet-shaped E-Type was also your best bet at scoring an equally attractive young woman to sit shotgun as you raged through the Hollywood Hills with the top down.

Spotted here on East 63rd street, this charcoal on blood red beauty is nothing short of breathtaking. Think of it as one more reason to work hard folks.
