Man on the Move Goes To India – Volume III: Ambassadors

January 27th, 2012 by Emir

You know the old saying…if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. The cabbies in India proudly embrace this motto as evidenced by their taxi of choice for the last half century. The Hindistan Ambassador, lovingly referred to as “The King of Indian Roads” by locals, is essentially a copy of a late 50s Morris Oxford III that has been produced by Hindustan Motors since 1958. Head to their website for tech specs and you’ll find innovations like drum brakes and a 38HP diesel motor. Jokes aside though, they actually do have a wide range of engines including a natural gas option. Think of it as old tech with a new theme.

Pictured above and below, the handsome Ambassador doing what is does best…schlepping people around.

Man on the Move Goes to India – Two and Three Wheeled Edition

January 12th, 2012 by Emir

Gaze upon the first in our series of posts chronicling the street spotting scene in India (yeah, that’s right, we’re global now). Pictured here, sights and sounds from 2 and 3 wheeled methods of transport with a few horses and camels thrown in for good measure.

This beautiful, gritty imagery really forces you to rethink the word utility don’t cha think?

Bentley Continental Flying Spur Speed – Park St, Kolkata [India]

December 6th, 2011 by Emir

This Conti GT may not win sighting of the century in the states, but it’s a fairly big deal to spot one of these bruisers in Kolkata where most of the things that go are powered by puny put put diesels or, better yet, good old fashioned pedals. The W12-powered, 600HP beast of a luxo sedan must have been chauffeuring around some well-to-do local because the moment I begun snapping, security guards proceeded to shout “no photos, no photos!”

A gallon of regular gas in Kolkata is about $6.50. What do you figure a tank full of premium in this baby will run you.

Exotic indeed.

Chevy Impala: NW 13th & Davis – Portland [OR]

November 3rd, 2011 by Emir

Spotted this tall drink of Chevy on NW 13th & Davis. With its utterly grand proportions, this baby is the automotive equivalent to Kareem Adbul Jabar after a couple of hours on a medieval torture rack. That translates to a 2-door coupe that’s roughly 1 foot longer than a modern day Cadillac Escalade SUV. Think about that for a moment.

Tail fins and dreams!

Toyota Landcruiser, NW – 13th & Davis, Portland

October 30th, 2011 by Emir

These 40-Seroes Landcruisers are so cool. Steel roof, contrasting color scheme, tough-as-nails build character. This little guy, when properly equipped, is 3/4 ton rated. That’s on par with today’s full-sized pick ups. Quite the work horse. This one, spotted in front of W+K, appears to be near flawless, likely the subject of a recent frame-off restoration. She looks so perfect that me thinks it might be a restomod. Either way, the truck looks amazing.

Aston Martin Vantage: NW Naito Pkwy, Portland [OR]

September 21st, 2011 by Emir

Porsche just dropped their all-new 2012 911 on us at the Frankfurt Auto Show. It’s the iconic 2+2 that’s been grabbing enthusiast hearts and minds since the 1960s. Well, unbeknownst to many, there are a few other choices when approaching this category. This handsome Aston Martin Vantage is one of them. And while it may not be as perfectly balanced a sports car as the Porsche, it does emit one hell of a throaty, high revving symphony from the slick looking tailpipes. A symphony that sounds more Italian than British. Hopefully the owner gets some good use out of that drop top before the Winter chill sets in.

August 10th, 2011 by Emir

Looking for something fun to do in the Portland area? Not anymore you’re not. Running through September 11th, The Allure of the Automobile is showcasing 16 of the world’s most luxurious, rare, and brilliantly conceived automobiles designed between 1930 and the mid-1960s. From the avant garde 1937 Hispano-Suiza owned by French apéritif baron André Dubonnet to the ’57 Jaguar XK-SS Roadster once owned by Hollywood legend Steve McQueen, the exhibition traces the evolution of the motorcar, showcasing developments in automotive design and engineering.

How does that old saying go? The one about not makin ‘em like they used to.

Ferrari 612 Scaglietti – SW Lower Boons Ferry, Tualatin [OR]

August 5th, 2011 by Emir

Spotted this elegant 612 Scaglietti in a Whole Foods parking lot of all places. So, while the owner shopped for organic peanut butter inside, I fired off a few rounds for your viewing pleasure. Despite its seemingly fresh looks, the 612 has actually been retired from the line up. The new prancing horse flagship, known as FF, has taken the top spot from 612. The FF stands for four seats and four wheel drive, a drastic departure from the elegant grand touring machine pictured here. Progress…go figure
