Hummer H1 – Henry Street & Clark, Brooklyn

February 12th, 2010 by Austin

If there were one day of the year that was less offensive than others to drive one of these around, I guess Monday was it. So kudos to the owner of this extra obnoxious HumVee for buying a vehicle that is utilized properly 1 day out of the year. I’m not in the Sierra Club or anything but buying one of these just seems absurd at this point. Yes, I know – high powered sports cars get the same or worse gas mileage as this H1. But at least they fit inside lanes and accelerate like a bat out of hell.

Chevy Traverse – Interstate 26 South, Asheville

December 31st, 2009 by Austin

Chevy Traverse - North Carolina

What did I get for xmas 2009? A few Xbox games, a new lens for my camera and, oh yeah, a massive blizzard that dropped 26 inches on us just before we needed to get into the car for the annual Virginia to North Carolina family holiday trip. The Prius wasn’t exactly cutting the mustard so we rented this fully loaded Chevy Traverse instead.

Custom Chopper – Montigue Street, Brooklyn Heights

December 15th, 2009 by Austin

Custom Chopper in Brooklyn Heights

This Brooklyn chopper stands out like a skinny girl at a Jenny Craig meeting. From the hand-tooled leather saddle and handmade pipes to the intricate paint scheme and hand formed tank & rear fender, the design detail is simply exquisite. Further supporting this bike’s ultra clean looks, the designer omitted the front brake and fender. Hundreds of man hours and a silly amount of cash have likely gone into its construction. And as you might be able to tell, form definitely trumps function. Your spine will pay for looks this good – the rigid tail and lack of any suspension underneath the seat mean this baby is a real buckaroo over the city streets. This custom chopper is what we call TTT – Tavern To Tavern.

2010 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 – DUMBO, Brooklyn

September 15th, 2009 by Austin

2010 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500Say what you will about high-horsepower American sports cars but don’t even think about talking smack on Ford’s new GT500 or it will come and find you. The throwback pony car gets better for 2010 thanks to, among other things, fresh styling, a more evolved interior, considerably more power and a newfound level of handling prowess that puts most straight-line stereotypes to bed. Ford was good enough to loan us one for the weekend and, after more than 500 miles behind the Alcantara-lined steering wheel, all we can say is yeehaw.

Ford Thunderbird – Columbia Heights, Brooklyn

September 9th, 2009 by Austin

Gen 2 Thurnderbird Brooklyn rear

Another classic T-Bird in Brooklyn. What are the chances? Pretty good actually – Ford sold nearly 200,000 of these Gen 2 models from 1958 – 1960. Thanks to the rather long rear overhang, this baby appears to be floating when viewed the rear. We prefer the European flavor seen in the gen 3 design (1961-1963) but certainly acknowledge its handsome predecessor in the ranks of vintage American greatness.

'57 Chevy – Cadman Plaza, Brooklyn

August 28th, 2009 by Austin

57Chevybrooklyn1

Pop your head into one of those cramped little stores on Canal Street and you will find ‘57 Chevy toys sitting alongside a mini Statue of Liberty, a 30 rock snow globe, the I Love NY T-shirts and a poster of Marilyn Monroe’s skirt blowing up. The iconic automotive shape goes together with American culture like peas and carrots.

Mercury Cougar – Columbia Heights, Brooklyn

August 25th, 2009 by Austin

Mercury Cougar

More refined and upscale than its Dearborn platform-mate, these ‘67-’68 gen 1 Cougars were positioned as Mustangs that had gone off to European finishing school. Aside from the fact that the two cars shared no exterior body panels, Cougar customers also got more luxurious appointments and standard V8 power. We were stopped dead in our tracks by the gaping full-width grille that is often likened to that of an electric shaver.

1963 Ford Thunderbird – Vine Street, Brooklyn

August 17th, 2009 by Austin

gen 3 tbird vine street brooklyn

We spotted this ’63 T-bird hanging around Vine Street in Brooklyn. The first generation’s (55-57) instantly recognizable shape is synonymous with the Thunderbird name but we prefer these bullet-shaped third generation (61-63) models. This beautiful two-tone coupe is a 63, which added some tasteful flair to 61-62 models by replacing the chrome strip running the flank with a Mercedes SLR-like contour line that runs into the top of the front wheel well. It looks really handsome and adds European style to this seemingly un-restored Brooklyn classic.

1966 Chrysler Newport – Old Dock Street, Brooklyn

July 30th, 2009 by Austin

chysler newport old dock street brooklyn

From a stunning 1941 concept car to fin-tastic coupes, sedans, wagons and convertibles circa 1960, Chrysler has certainly taken liberal use of the Newport moniker. And, with all the low riders and assorted customs roaming around, it is clear that enthusiasts have too. It wasn’t until ‘61 that Chrysler dedicated a specific model line to the Newport name. Up until that point, the badge designated a 2-door hardtop body configuration. This entry level full size sedan, essentially a de-contented sister vehicle to the upscale New Yorker, was meant to bridge the gap between Chrysler and Dodge when DeSoto went under.

Lotus Exige S 260 Sport – DUMBO, Brooklyn

July 28th, 2009 by Austin

Lotus Exige S 260 Sport

The Exige S 260 Sport has no power steering, will send shock waves through your spine and is harder to get into than the back stage area at a KISS concert. It also represents the most fun a person can have on 4 wheels short commuting to work via Indy car. If you can manage to squeeze into the scooped out carbon fiber racing seats, the view is nothing more than exposed structural elements, pedals that are spaced mere inches apart and an instrument panel consisting of 3 knobs.  Creature comforts include A/C, power windows and an Alpine stereo. If you need more, don’t buy a Lotus.
