New Product: BMW M6 Coupe – New York, New York

New Product: BMW M6 Coupe - New York, New York

The best thing about heads up display is also the worst thing about heads up display. Once you get past the cool factor of a Tron-like digital readout on your windshield, the constant reminder of how fast you’re going becomes exactly that…a constant reminder of how fast you’re going. It takes a bit of the fun out of speeding and certainly does not allow for the plausible deniability you’ll need when flashing lights all of a sudden appear in your rearview mirror at 125 MPH. Not that I would ever go that fast in a loaner car or anything.

In case you couldn’t already tell, BMW was kind enough to throw us the keys to their uber GT, the M6 Coupe. The M taxonomy, of course, is indicative of the german luxury brand’s Motorsport division that’s been engineering gut-wrenching performance into factory BMWs since 1972. Now in its third generation, the M6 is back after a two-year hiatus with more power than ever on tap and truckloads of advancements across the range in engine efficiency, lightweight materials, and advanced technology like heads up display, night vision, lane departure warnings and 7-Speed M Double Clutch. The result is a 4,200 pound Bavarian scud missile with enough oomph to kiss 155MPH (governed) and enough luxury to make you forget your doing it.

BMW says the 4.4-liter, M TwinPower Turbo V-8 engine’s 560HP and 500 LB-FT make it the most powerful engine ever outfitted in a BMW. Spend some time behind the wheel and this bold claim becomes instantly believable. My Sakhir Orange Metallic tester was bold in its color and violent in its velocity. The claim to 60MPH from BMW is 4.1 seconds and that figure is definitely Man on the Move certified. Compared to the previous generation, V10-powered M6, the new model is perhaps a little softer around the edges, a little more hushed and certainly more sophisticated than the outgoing model. Some well-to-do everyday drivers might consider this a good thing while many-a-adolescent speed hooligan may not. In either case, the new M6 certainly gets your pulse racing.

Above and below, the M6 strutting its stuff in and around Manhattan and Westchester County.

Chevy Caprice Wagon [Lowered] – The Arts District: Downtown LA

Chevy Caprice Wagon [Lowered] - The Arts District: Downtown LA

Spotted this decidedly un-family truckster-esq Chevy Caprice Wagon in front of what I can only describe as a wild bear-on-bear mural in the arts district in Downtown Los Angeles. Lowered and on what looks to be American Racing thrust wheels, this 90s wagon is super slammed VIP style with menacing black tints to top off the look. Bet you didn’t realize a Caprice wagon could look this good. And in arctic white no less.

Fisker Farewell Spotting – Poperinge, Belgium

Fisker Farewell Spotting - Poperinge, Belgium

It’s a damn shame what’s happening to Fisker. The environmentally conscious luxury auto upstart had nothing but the best intentions and a damn fine looking product if I do say so myself. Well, aside from that whole catching on fire thing. The Karma pictured here, a plug in hybrid sport sedan, is utterly easy on the eyes thanks to the design talents of one Henrik Fisker. But now he is out and so is the federal funding, two extremely daunting challenges to overcome alongside investor cashflow issues, vehicle quality problems and Hurricane Sandy destroying a crop of 300 vehicles.

We wish them the best of luck in recovering but it might not be in the cards.

Ferrari Enzo – Scottsdale Road & 101 Loop: Scottsdale, Arizona

Mike Myers used to do a skit on SNL called Coffee Talk where he played a middle-aged yenta talk show host named Linda Richman who’s shtick was to schmooze with guests over a cup of Joe. It’s one of the funniest skits the show has ever produced. Car guys like coffee too. What can be better than a piping hot cup of delicious java in your hand, a gaggle of beautiful rides in your purview and like-minded cars guys all around you just itching to talk shop. Of course I’m talking about Cars & Coffee, the national enthusiast organization  dedicated to, well, cars and coffee.

New York International Auto Show: Sights & Sounds

New York International Auto Show: Sights & Sounds

It’s that magical time of year when layer upon layer of shapely sheet metal from all walks of life and countries of manufacture come together in beautiful car geek harmony on the floor of Jacob Javits Convention Center. That’s right, it’s auto show time. From Porsche’s all-new 2014 GT3 hotness to Rolls Royce’s also new GT horror, there were loads of notable debuts on hand [here’s the full list]. Andy Warhol would have appreciated the pop-art-esq color palette a handful of manufacturers we working with…Audi had an R8 coupe finished in silky blue matte brilliance, Dodge went all out with an outrageously tangerine SRT Viper TA and Fiat dipped into the Mopar parts pin to put together a charmingly vintage pistachio color & accessory package on their pint-sized 500.

The show runs through April 7th in Manhattan.
