It was the fall of 2008. Yankee pin stripes graced the field at Yankee Stadium for the last time. Yes, “The House That Ruth Built” for the absolute last time. It seemed unimaginable. Like the beginning of a novel where the world is about to end or something. But the world did carry on and so did the New York Yankees in a brand new, magnificent stadium. They even won the World Series that year to start things out in style. In his 13th installment of Reflections of America, our resident photorealist Bob Petillo somehow managed to tie in his love for vintage chrome with the historic day in New York.
“It was worth a special trip to the Bronx for me to take pictures to reflect in the chrome of this ’55 Buick. It was the last week of play at the Stadium and I just had to get it. I didn’t even get to go to the game. The Stadium is reflected 4 times as it appears dreamlike and surrealistically in the chrome of the bumper and tail light. I think it captures a major piece of American History.”
