Setting the Stage – West 26th Street, NYC

March 25th, 2011 by Stu

Ever wonder how movie set designers achieve such period-correct looks for their films? Well, here’s how they do it. Rent a bunch of old cars and line the streets of NYC with them. Or at least that’s what director David Chase is doing in shooting his yet-to-be-named film about rock & roll in the 1960s. I stumbled onto the NYC movie set walking home from work the other day. The whole street, 26th b/t 5th & 6th, was lined with the likes of Checkers, Falcons, Beetles and Mustangs. It was a thoroughly enjoyable experience, like a time warp in the heart of Chelsea.

  • once when walking around alphabet city, i came across an entire street lined with old cars, including 3 or 4 nypd cars of that era (best i could guess was late 60s to early 70s) – but no film crew or equipment in sight. it was unreal, and of course i didnt have a camera (was still a cell phone luddite, so didnt think to use my cells camera). Combined with the buildings (which havent changed) i could have sworn i was timewarped to another decade. Sure enough, a year or so later, i realized it was a set for Life on Mars hehe

I guess this shoot is for Twylight Zones. funny how the old checker cab looks like a show queen compared to the other cars!
