Yamaha YZF-R7 – Hillsboro, Oregon

March 18th, 2010 by Emir

Despite the familiar sport bike silhouette, these Yamaha R7′s aren’t exactly an everyday sighting. That is unless you were a big SBK (Superbike World Championship) fan between 1999 and 2002. The R7 was actually designed to compete in SBK, but due to homologation rules, Yamaha was forced to manufacture a limited run of 500 hand-built bikes for supposed street use. Volume numbers like that make the R7 one of the rarest production bikes ever to leave a Japanese factory. But with a price tag North of $30K and limited SBK success, these ultra high tech marvels were rather short lived. I spotted this absurdly low mileage example (just 100 miles) outside Hillsboro MotorSport and managed to fire off a few rounds before the owner got too agitated. Is it for sale? “Yes of course, provide the price is right”

Lamborghini Gallardo – Town of Bad Staffelstein, Bavaria

March 17th, 2010 by Stu

German tuning house CDC International is serious about adding flair to already wild exotics like the Audi R8, Bentley Continental GT and Lamborghini Gallardo. Wheels, body kits, high performance exhausts, engine upgrades…they do it all. Their latest and greatest product draws inspiration from Lamborghini’s Reventón, the 2007 Frankfurt Auto Show stunner that featured a fighter jet-inspired carbon fiber body atop a “base” Murcielago LP640. The production run was limited to just 20 examples costing a cool $1.5mm each and the batch sold out before show models could even unveil the damn thing. For those of you who were too poor or too slow to grab one, CDC has designed this Reventon-look body kit (front bumper, rear bumper, side skirts, and diffuser) for the Murcielago’s baby bro, the Gallardo. They appropriately refer to it as “a little Reventón”. Interested? The package will run you a cool $25K. Nothing little about that. CDC was good enough to photograph the final product for us, seen here posed against a randomly colorful recycling depot in the Town of Bad Staffelstein.

Thanks Mike!

Garage Queens – Caddy Series 62 Coupe – W25th Street, NYC

March 16th, 2010 by Stu

This glorious 1954 Series 62 Coupe was parked all by its lonesome in a Chelsea area garage. Like many of the American land yachts from the day, it’s positively massive. Overall vehicle length is damn near 19 feet (that’s more than an Escalade) and curb weight is more than 4,300 pounds. Keep in mind this is a 2 door coupe! The price tag was equally grand for 1954 at around $3,800. I guess that tells you something about Cadillac’s former brand equity in this country. Feel free to weigh in below with your thoughts, rants and sentiments about a bygone era when cars had class, style, and distinction.

DeLorean DMC-12 – Artists Space, Greene Street NYC

March 15th, 2010 by Stu

If you’ve ever been curious about the man behind the Delorean, head to Artists Space at 38 Greene Street for a showing of Duncan Campell’s 2009 film Make It New John. Beyond the wild looks and movie star status, the DMC-12 and its maker John Delorean actually have quite a tale to tell. From wide-eyed 1980s optimism and $10,000 premiums when the car initially hit dealerships to company insolvency and an FBI arrest a couple of short years later, the back story reads more like a Hollywood drama than anything else. The 51 minute film, which runs every hour on the hour until May 1st, fuses original footage from the 1980s with re-enactments and documentary-style interviews to contrast the DeLorean dream with its spectacular downfall during a critical period in Northern Ireland’s history and the canonization of the car. Campbell describes the film as “a parody of the American myth of mobility”. Our friend and fellow photographer Aaron Stern was good enough to snap these pictures from the exhibit’s opening night.

Chevy Chevelle SS – State St, Santa Barbara

March 12th, 2010 by Nick

So Sick. Super Sexy. Sensationally Stylish. Simply Smashing. Sensually Seductive. Sinfully Smooth. Assign what words you will, the SS is worn like a badge of honor on all worthy bowties, and worn with pride. This drop-top Chevelle was sitting pretty in a bank parking lot when I ran across the street to capture its powerful, nonchalant stance. Like the silent man with a double black-belt, leaning calmly against the bar — he doesn’t need to talk about the fact that he can kill you twelve different ways with his hands — but he can. Of course, when your muscle car comes with its own guard dog, who cares what color the belt is.

Lamborghini LP670-4 SV – Miami, Florida

March 11th, 2010 by Stu

Our friends at luxury lifestyle forum Teamspeed.com were kind enough to share these utterly sexy pictures of Lamborghini’s hyper exotic LP670-4 SV. In case you couldn’t tell, it’s the baddest, most ferocious raging bull of them all. Automotive sharp shooter Webb Bland, who has had his fair share of encounters with exotic subjects like this, was behind the lens for this tasty photo shoot. You might be wondering why Webb chose shoot locations in the middle of the woods for a car with 3 inches of ground clearence – “Simple. Nobody else has. It’s the last place you’d ever expect to see such a car, and that’s precisely why I did it.” Awesome work Webb – our caps are off to you.

Father and Son Dodge Challengers – Corona, California

March 10th, 2010 by Stu

You don’t see this everyday – papa Challenger, in all his original glory, alongside the younger, svelter offspring. Harder to believe, the cars are painted in near identical color schemes. But this automotive encounter wasn’t planned, I swear. Our Pal Andy was cruising in his Hemi Orange SRT-8 (left) and caught an eyeful of vintage Mopar staring back at him (right). Driving by without taking a picture is like sticking up a bank and not taking the money. Perhaps the best part, this is not the first time we have spotted such a righteous muscle car pose. Hopefully it won’t be the last.

Thanks Andy! Great find.

German classics – Lincoln Blvd, Santa Monica

March 9th, 2010 by Mike

I’m not sure what it is about the Venice/Santa Monica border but it’s like a magnet for independent German auto mechanics. Including the guy I use, there are 7-8 indy establishments within walking distance from my house, usually with interesting cars on the lot. This spot in particular, called Glassers Auto Body, always catches my eye, mainly because of the aging Mercedes 450 SEL 6.9 and rotting BMW 2800 that have been sitting 3 millimeters from each other for years now. It’s a shame that two cars with so much historical significance are left in this condition, but even more of a shame that they’re not being driven. Oh well, at least they look pretty, even in this state.

Ford GT 720 Mirage – Eastbourne Terrace, Paddington

March 8th, 2010 by Stu

We really appreciate the pictures you send in after encountering cool rides from all over the globe. We really really appreciate it when those unique sightings include hyper exotic sports cars rocking bright orange paint and a 720 HP supercharged V8. Say hello to the Avro 720 Mirage, a special edition Ford GT from Brooklands-based tuning firm Avro Motorcars. The mad scientists from Avro worked with well the known American muscle manufacturers at Roush to engineer this beast. In addition to the orange metallic paint, matte-black details and laundry list of extreme performance upgrades, Avro added a whopping 170 HP (550 + 170 = 720!) and 127 lb-ft of torque (627 in all) to the already competent Ford V8. The net net is a 220 MPH top speed and enough forward thrust to recede your hair line a few years early. The best part – the production run is limited to just 10 cars. That’s right folks – sightings don’t get a whole lot rarer than this. Click here for a video I found on youtube of this actual car!

Great find Paul!

Muscle Car Trifecta – Harriman State Park, New York

March 6th, 2010 by Stu

I was going through my files and stumbled onto these amazing pictures taken during a muscle car comparo I wrote for the Summer 2009 issue of Men’s Fitness. The photo editor decided against using these images, instead opting for stock photography to accompany the review. He fed me some line about the gloomy weather not being sunny enough. Does anyone know what he was thinking? We all know that wet muscle cars look better than dry muscle cars any day of the week. They have more attitude. And the grey skies add a menacing effect to the trio’s already aggressive styling. I hope you enjoy them.
