If you’ve ever been curious about the man behind the Delorean, head to Artists Space at 38 Greene Street for a showing of Duncan Campell’s 2009 film Make It New John. Beyond the wild looks and movie star status, the DMC-12 and its maker John Delorean actually have quite a tale to tell. From wide-eyed 1980s optimism and $10,000 premiums when the car initially hit dealerships to company insolvency and an FBI arrest a couple of short years later, the back story reads more like a Hollywood drama than anything else. The 51 minute film, which runs every hour on the hour until May 1st, fuses original footage from the 1980s with re-enactments and documentary-style interviews to contrast the DeLorean dream with its spectacular downfall during a critical period in Northern Ireland’s history and the canonization of the car. Campbell describes the film as “a parody of the American myth of mobility”. Our friend and fellow photographer Aaron Stern was good enough to snap these pictures from the exhibit’s opening night.
