One of our loyal readers spotted this 197 MPH supercar from Stuttgart rolling down the 300 Block of Hopkins Ave in downtown Aspen. A fitting venue for such a rare, valuable piece of equipment, the 959 (1987-1989) remains one of the rarest, most advanced, ferociously fast supercars ever made. Its performance credentials, like a 3.7 second dash to 60 mph, remain disgustingly impressive to this day. This one looks to be pretty legit from where we sit, but please weigh in with replica car theories below.
Great find Jim!

If this is indeed a real thing it’s the awesomest find to date.
hmmmm fer some reason i think its a replicar.
hey arch – is it just a feeling or something looks out of place?
You’d think the real thing would
never see wet pavement.
Maybe that’s just me.
just a hunch really…. the tail lights look kind of odd and the spoiler looks ind of wavy, though it could just be the light. and the color. but who knows ? i really don’t.
aha! i think i spotted the fatal sign…. note the side-view mirror, square. all the 959′s i’ve seen have more tapered aero-dynamic side view mirrors. i would say this is a replicar based on this.
one more sign…. note the “third” center brake light…… the 959′s were never federalized and i think the third brakelight is strictly a usdot thing….. so if this was a ‘real’ 959 there would be no third brake light. i have to admit its a pretty detailed and convincing replicar though. its very hard to tell its not ‘real’.
Not real. Multiple giveaways including the aforementioned mirror shape issue (though the CHMSL is probably not a giveaway, as the 959 was indeed federalized).
The comment about these cars not being driven on wet pavement…you should try and track down an article (it may have been in an issue of C&D or SCI back in the late 80s) that details a ride in a 959 with Danny Sullivan at the wheel going 150 in a blizzard.

I saw the same car in Aspen CO, Christmas of 2009 on a family ski trip. I couldn’t believe my eyes. It was a short glance, and it didn’t sink in how rare that car is until minutes later. Too bad it seems to be a fake according to some.
That would be Ralph Lauren’s 959.
