Chevy Traverse – Interstate 26 South, Asheville

Chevy Traverse - North Carolina

What did I get for xmas 2009? A few Xbox games, a new lens for my camera and, oh yeah, a massive blizzard that dropped 26 inches on us just before we needed to get into the car for the annual Virginia to North Carolina family holiday trip. The Prius wasn’t exactly cutting the mustard so we rented this fully loaded Chevy Traverse instead.

Ferrari 308 GTS – NW 17th Ave & Glisan, Portland

Ferrari 308 GTS - Portland

It’s not the rarest, fastest or prettiest prancing horse to ever come out of Maranello but it might just be the most easily recognizable thanks to an unusually high production volume (Ferrari built 12,000 308 models in all) and one dashing private investigator named Thomas Magnum.

1951 Lincoln Sport Sedan – Mercer Street, NYC

December 29th, 2009 by Ian

Spend more than 30 seconds on the streets of Manhattan and you’re bound to see at least one blacked out Lincoln Town Car jockeyed by a black suit with a lead foot. Coming into contact with these thoroughly bland livery vehicles on a daily basis makes it easy to forget about the heritage behind the Lincoln nameplate. Lincoln was afterall the official limousine for the President dating back to 1939, when the then coveted brand reeked of status, taste and American luxury. We were immediately reminded of this former glory upon spotting this stunning ’51 Sport Sedan casually parked in front of Soho’s Antique Garage.

Under the hood: Bob Millstein

Bob Millstein - Jaguar XK120

My father and I have been clamoring for knowledge on vintage Jaguar XKs lately. The old man is hot to acquire one of the beautiful sports cars as a sunny Sunday driver and, if my mother asks, an investment that will only continue to appreciate over time. Unlike shopping new, finding the classic car of your dreams means more than a weekend or two of kicking tires at the local dealership. It requires chat room discussions galore, visits to every classic car show you can find and endless thumbing through Hemmings and Sport Car Market. Most importantly, it requires spending inordinate amounts of time with people like Bob Millstein.

Under the hood: Robbie Pyle

Robbie Pyle and his 1965 ALPHA ROMEO GIULIA SPRINT GT
An Alfa Romeo isn’t exactly the car people picture when referencing a self-proclaimed “skate-rat.” But believe it or not, a dirty skateboard fits just as nicely in the back of a vintage European classic as it does in any other cool car usually associated with younger “hip” kids in LA. However, looks can be deceiving. In a town where appearance is viewed as being essential to status, Robbie breaks the stereotype.

Oldsmobile Cutlass – Lafayette Street, NYC

December 23rd, 2009 by Ian

We spotted this pristine Cutlass on Lafayette Street in SOHO. It’s one of those rare occasions when a vinyl roof actually compliments an automobile – particularly funny in this case because many of the people who drove this car from ’68-’72 continued the styling trend well into the 1990s.

Rolls Royce Corniche IV – Thompson Street, NYC

December 22nd, 2009 by Ian

Rolls1We spotted this cushy cabrio outside the Thompson Hotel in SOHO. The vanity plates seem a little bold for anyone short of Russell Simmons or Jay-Z. But hey, it’s Manhattan – maybe the music moguls are sipping on drinks inside.

Austin Healey 3000 – Jericho Turnpike, Long Island

December 22nd, 2009 by Stu

Austin Healey 3000 - Jericho TurnpikeWinter is officially here and, as if walking outside wasn’t unpleasant enough, the cabs are making dirt-flavored slushies out of last weekend’s snowfall. I figured sharing these images of happy Long Island motorists enjoying their classic roadster on a beautiful Autumn day might cheer you up. So think warm thoughts and enjoy.

VW Thing – Santa Monica Blvd, West Hollywood

VW Thing - Santa Monica

There’s just something about a car being so damn ugly it’s beautiful. If this is a grandfather, the grandson is a steroid-using, metro-sexual, in-the-gym-5-days-a-week H2. Part of “the greatest generation”, where form followed function, this thing sits on the porch, shaking his head, asking himself, “where the hell did we go wrong?” You can call it dated, boxy, ugly or utilitarian, but whatever you do, don’t dare call it unoriginal.
