Once upon a time, Manhattan was flooded with these Checker cabs from Kalamazoo. Easily the most famous livery silhouette our country has ever known, the thoroughly uninspiring Crown Vics and appliance-like hybrid cabs rolling around now have nothing on this baby. We had trouble naming the year of this beautifully original example because Checkers remained virtually unchanged throughout their 26 year run (1956-1982). Their simplistic mechanicals and readily available parts were a major reason cabbies like these things so darn much. It’s good to see this Checker is still live and kicking

looks like checker is going out of business – or selling all their assets in the midst of chapter 11 – http://www2.canada.com/windsorstar/news/business/story.html?id=68255792-a032-46d0-b885-7f0dd19ec6fa
